Quick answer: Light parts ship in a box; an engine or transmission ships as freight, and freight is nothing like a UPS delivery. The driver brings it to the curb, not into your garage, and getting it off the truck is your responsibility unless liftgate service was bought up front. What protects you is what you write on the delivery receipt before you sign.

Shipping is one of the most common questions when buying used parts online β€” especially for heavy items like engines. Here is how it works so there are no surprises.

Two ways parts ship

  • Small-parcel (UPS/FedEx) for lighter parts β€” alternators, sensors, mirrors, headlights.
  • Freight (LTL) for heavy or bulky parts β€” engines, transmissions, body panels. These ship on a pallet via a freight carrier, and the carrier contacts you to schedule delivery.

The dividing line is weight: UPS and FedEx cap a package at 150 lb, so an alternator stays parcel while an engine or transmission moves to freight.

Typical costs and times

Small-parcel shipping is inexpensive and fast. Freight costs more (it depends on weight, distance and whether you need liftgate or residential delivery), but it's the safe way to move a heavy part. Your quote will include the shipping cost so you can compare total price.

Curbside, dock and liftgate: the words that change a freight quote

  • Dock β€” the truck backs to a raised loading dock and the pallet rolls off. Cheapest. Few homes have one; many repair shops do.
  • Curbside β€” the default. The trailer floor sits at truck height, and the consignee (you) is expected to get the freight off it.
  • Liftgate β€” a powered platform that lowers the pallet to the ground at the curb. Drivers do not move freight into buildings or garages β€” that is inside delivery, a separate charge.

Two surcharges recur: residential delivery (a home has no dock) and limited access (schools, military bases). Declare which apply before the shipment is tendered β€” accessorials found at the door get billed afterward. Receiving at a shop with a dock or forklift removes several at once, and delivery method is one honest reason two quotes differ; see how used-part pricing is built.

How heavy parts ship safely

Engines and transmissions are drained, strapped, and crated or palletized to prevent damage in transit. Reputable suppliers package carefully and many offer insured freight β€” confirm packaging and insurance in your quote. Carriers may dipstick the openings to confirm fluids are out, and a built crate earns a lower freight class than a bare pallet.

The five minutes at delivery that decide everything

Inspect before you sign the delivery receipt. A clean signature states the freight arrived undamaged, and carriers can decline a claim for damage never noted at delivery. Walk the pallet for a split crate, crushed packaging, disturbed wrap or fresh oil on the deck.

  • Photograph it at the curb before it is moved β€” packaging, damage and the freight labels.
  • Write the damage on the receipt in the driver's presence. "Dented" is weak; "crate panel split, oil pan dented, photos taken" is not.
  • If you cannot uncrate it there, do not write "subject to inspection" β€” a major LTL carrier's rules tariff treats any use of "subject to" as evidence of clear delivery. Note the visible damage to the crate itself specifically, then handle the rest as a concealed-damage report.
  • If damage is severe you can refuse the shipment β€” call the supplier while the driver is there.

Report it immediately β€” concealed-damage windows are carrier-specific and measured in days, not weeks. Federal law allows at least nine months to file a written cargo claim against an interstate motor carrier, but an undocumented receipt sinks a claim long before that. Tell whoever arranged the shipment; ask who files the claim before you pay, and keep it beside the terms in our warranty guide.

Local pickup

Many salvage yards offer local pickup, which saves on shipping for large parts. If a supplier is near you, that's often the cheapest option.

Get shipping included in your quote

When you request a quote by VIN, suppliers include shipping cost and options up front β€” so you compare the real total, not just the part price.
