About This Engine (Short / Long / Complete)
On a used engine the first thing that moves a quote is scope, not price: short block, long block, or complete drop-in. Whatever is not bolted to the unit comes off your old engine, and every transfer is labour, so the cheapest tier is rarely the cheapest installed. The second is which engine, and year, make and model will not settle it: the 2018 Camry alone was sold with a 2.5 L four, a 3.5 L V6 and a 2.5 L hybrid four. Send the VIN, the code stamped on the block and a photo of the under-hood or door-jamb emissions label - a vehicle built to California standards can carry different emissions components from a federally certified one, and that is how it was built, not where it is driven.

Before you order, it helps to read:
Common Signs Your Engine May Need Replacing
- Rod knock that grows with rpm and never quietens once warm
- Oil pressure low at hot idle, with bearing rumble or valvetrain clatter
- Blue smoke and oil disappearing between services
- A dead cylinder that survives a new plug, coil and injector
- Oil and coolant mixing again after the head has already been done
- Hydrolocked by water ingestion, or seized after running dry
Symptoms vary by vehicle and driving conditions. Always confirm diagnosis before replacement.
What to Check When Buying a Used Engine
- Settle the tier first - short block, long block or complete - then get a written list of what is actually attached
- Send the VIN, the stamped engine code and a photo of the emissions label; California-certified and federal builds are not always the same
- Ask for per-cylinder compression or leak-down figures, a cold start-up video and an oil-pressure reading - numbers, not a pass
- Ask the donor mileage and why the car was scrapped, and rule out a flood donor
- Ask whether a core charge applies and in what condition your old engine has to go back
- Confirm your shop will fit an engine you supply, and price the gaskets, seals, fluids and timing set while access is open
Ask for these details and any available photos before approving a purchase.
What Happens After You Request a Quote

How Pricing Is Determined
Pricing for used engine (short / long / complete) depends on several factors:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and engine configuration
- Mileage and overall condition of the donor vehicle
- Supplier location and shipping distance
- Warranty coverage offered
Scope sets an engine quote before anything else: short block, long block and complete drop-in are three different products, so a quote starts from a line-by-line list of what is on the pallet. After that it is how common the engine code is, what the donor was and what test data exists, whether a core return applies to your old unit, and freight on a crated, palletised part. Budget separately for what the job needs whichever engine arrives - gaskets, seals, fluids, usually the timing set and water pump - because access is never cheaper than with the engine out. We do not publish prices: request a quote and read the written warranty and return terms first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Short block, long block or complete - which should I ask for?
Match it to what failed. A knock with healthy heads points to a short block; overheating or head damage means a long block, so suspect heads do not go straight back on; an unclear diagnosis or hourly shop labour favours a complete unit. Then ignore the label and compare the itemised lists, because none of the three words is standardised.
How many miles is too many on a used engine?
There is no honest cut-off number. Wear shows in the readings rather than the odometer - oil pressure that sags at hot idle means bearing clearances have opened up, at any mileage. Treat mileage as one input beside donor history and test figures, and note our return policy states mileage estimates may be approximate and not guaranteed.
What should "tested" actually mean?
Figures per cylinder, not a pass. A compression test shows whether each cylinder builds pressure; a leak-down test shows whether it holds air and where the air escapes - intake, crankcase, or bubbles in the coolant - which names the failure. Add a cold start-up video and an oil-pressure reading for a real picture.
Will my shop install an engine I buy myself?
Ask before you order. Shops set their own customer-supplied-parts policy - some refuse outright, others accept only on signed conditions - because they carry the liability if the part fails and rarely warrant labour on hardware they did not supply. Confirm the engine code with us first: under our return policy, fitment problems traced to the vehicle details supplied are not returnable.
Can I work out my engine size from the VIN?
Partly. Federal rule 49 CFR 565.15 makes positions four to eight of the VIN the descriptor section, and for passenger cars engine type is one of the attributes the manufacturer has to encode there - but the coding is the manufacturer's own and is only decipherable with information they supply. So the VIN narrows it; the code stamped on the block confirms what is actually in the car. Send both with your quote request.
What compression readings should I accept on a used engine?
Look at the spread, not just the headline number. The common workshop rule is no more than about 10 percent difference between any of the cylinders, so one outlier is a problem even when the average looks healthy. Two low readings side by side usually mean a head gasket. Ask whether a wet test was done: if oil raises a low cylinder the rings or bore are worn, and if nothing changes a valve is leaking.
My engine overheated - what has to be fixed before a used one goes in?
The reason it overheated, first. Heat swells, warps and cracks heads and makes pistons scuff and seize, and the usual causes - a clogged radiator, a stuck thermostat, lost coolant, a slipping fan clutch - are all still there when the replacement lands. Oil starvation is the same story: almost always fatal, and usually a failed oil pump, a blocked pickup screen or a low oil level. Get the cause named first.
Will a used engine pass a California smog inspection?
Only if it counts as a replacement rather than an engine change. California's Bureau of Automotive Repair describes a replacement as a new, rebuilt, remanufactured or used engine of the same make, cylinder count and engine family, or test group, as the original, with the original emission controls reinstalled. Anything outside that is an engine change, which BAR requires to pass a Referee Center inspection and carry a Referee label.
How is compatibility verified?
Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.
What if the part does not fit?
Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.
How long does shipping take?
Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
