A headlight control module covers several different things depending on the vehicle: an HID ballast or igniter, an LED driver, an adaptive or levelling controller, or a central lighting module that switches and monitors the exterior lamps. The first job is establishing which one you actually have.

Match the lamp technology

An HID ballast, an LED driver and a halogen switching module are different devices with different outputs. They are not interchangeable in either direction, and connecting the wrong one can damage the lamp assembly, which is usually the far more expensive part. Confirm what your vehicle was built with, since trim levels within one model frequently differ.

Confirm the part number against your VIN through a VIN-based request. If you are also replacing the lamp assembly itself, see our headlight assembly guide.

Symptoms and what else causes them

  • One side out, the other fine: often the bulb, ballast or driver on that side, but check the connector and earth first.
  • Flickering or colour shift on HID: commonly an ageing bulb rather than the ballast. Bulbs shift colour and become unreliable near end of life.
  • Both sides out: more likely a switch, fuse, relay or central module than two simultaneous ballast failures.
  • Levelling or adaptive faults: frequently a ride-height sensor or its linkage, which is a much cheaper part than the module.
  • Intermittent operation: corroded connectors and water ingress at the lamp are extremely common.

Because HID and LED assemblies are expensive, it is worth having the cheaper items - bulb, connector, earth, ride-height sensor - eliminated properly before a module is ordered.

Safety note on HID systems

HID ballasts generate a very high ignition voltage. The system must be switched off and isolated before anything is disconnected, and the procedure is vehicle specific. This is work for a qualified technician.

Condition checks

  • Housing intact, with no cracks and no sign of water ingress or corrosion inside.
  • Connector pins straight, clean and none pushed back.
  • No burn marks, heat discolouration or swelling.
  • Mounting tabs unbroken - these are often brittle with age.
  • Whether it was tested and working when removed.

Before you commit

Confirm the part number, the lamp technology, whether adaptive or levelling functions are included, and whether coding is required. Our return policy lists electrical and electronic parts as non-returnable once installed, tested or connected, so the specification and the programming path need to be settled before the part is fitted rather than after. Our 30-day limited warranty (up to 90 days on select parts, where your quotation says so) covers the part itself, not labour, installation, diagnostics or any other repair cost. Returns must be requested within 7 calendar days of delivery and need a written RMA from us before anything is sent back.

Use the headlight control module quote page or the part request form with your VIN.
