About This CV Axle

A CV axle sends power to a steered or independently sprung wheel through two constant-velocity joints, and it is one of the few driveline parts where the wrong one looks identical to the right one. Spline count is the most important number: the shaft locks into the transmission at one end and the wheel hub at the other, and an axle with 27 splines instead of 28 still goes in, fits loosely, vibrates under acceleration and eventually strips its teeth. Compressed length matters next because it sets how the axle copes with suspension travel, and on a transverse front-drive car the two sides are rarely the same. Then there is the ABS tone ring - the notched ring the wheel-speed sensor reads. Some cars read wheel speed from a ring on the axle and others from the wheel bearing, so an axle missing the ring your car needs lights up the ABS, traction and stability warnings, while one carrying a ring your car does not use can foul the steering knuckle. Count splines, measure the old shaft and check for a ring before anyone orders.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used cv axle depends on several factors:

We quote rather than list prices. CV axle quotes turn on how specific the shaft is: which side, the spline counts at each end, the compressed length, and whether it carries an ABS tone ring. All-wheel-drive rear shafts and uncommon drivetrains are narrower than a mainstream front axle. Condition weighs as much as fitment here, since a used shaft is only worth having with sound joints and intact boots.

Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just replace the torn boot instead of the whole axle?

Only if the joint underneath is still healthy. A boot kit is a fair repair when the joint does not click in powered turns, does not shudder or bind, shows no scoring or pitting, and the splines and shaft are undamaged. Go to a complete axle when the boot has been open for an unknown time, when the grease comes out gritty, rusty, milky or metallic, or when more than one part of the shaft is worn - once grit is in the joint, sealing it up only delays the failure.

Are the left and right CV axles the same?

Usually not. On a transverse front-wheel-drive car the transmission sits off to one side, so the two shafts are different lengths, and spline counts can differ too. Say which side you need and measure the old shaft.

Does my CV axle need an ABS tone ring?

It depends where your car reads wheel speed. If the sensor reads a ring on the axle and the replacement has none, ABS, traction control and stability control set faults and drop out. If your car reads speed at the wheel bearing, an axle carrying an unnecessary ring can rub the knuckle. Look at the old shaft before ordering.

Is a used CV axle a sensible buy?

It depends on the application. For high-volume front-drive cars new and remanufactured shafts are easy to get, so used mainly makes sense where the part is hard to source - all-wheel-drive rear shafts, uncommon drivetrains, discontinued models. There a known-correct original shaft with sound joints removes the fitment guesswork. Tell us the vehicle and we will say which route to price.

Is the noise from my front wheel a bad CV axle or a bad wheel bearing?

Listen to when the noise changes. Timken's guidance is that a bearing rumble is present driving in a straight line and intensifies when you turn the wheel slightly left or right, and that the side opposite the rumbling is usually the defective one. Clicking or popping usually means a worn outer CV joint, though Timken notes loose bearing end play can make the same noise. Confirm it on a lift first.

Does a used CV axle come with a new axle nut and transaxle seal?

Expect to buy the hardware separately. Cardone ships a new retaining nut with every axle it sells because the original is likely worn or stripped, and tells installers to fit new transaxle seals whenever an axle is replaced so the unit does not leak afterwards. A used shaft arrives as a shaft, so have nut, seals and clips quoted alongside it.

How long can I keep driving on a CV axle that clicks?

Treat it as short-term. Timken lists snapping, clicking or popping as a sign of a worn or damaged outer CV joint, so the joint is already going. NHTSA's recall of 2021-2022 Corvette rear half-shafts shows where that ends: assemblies missing ball bearings can result in a loss of drive power, and an unexpected loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Can fitting a used CV axle damage my wheel bearing?

It can, through the axle nut. MOOG tells installers to tighten that nut with a torque wrench and not an impact wrench, because overtightening loads the bearing and causes premature wear to the hub assembly. Timken adds that inadequate clamping leaves excessive end play, which brings its own noise and ABS trouble. Have the hub checked while the axle is out.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
