About This Engine Mount

Engine mounts hold the engine in the car and keep its shake out of the cabin, and which type yours uses decides what you should be quoted. A plain mount is a rubber spring sandwiched between two metal plates, one bolted to the engine, one to the frame. A hydro-mount has hollow chambers filled with glycol or hydraulic fluid and acts like a jelly-filled donut; it goes where idle quality matters - four-cylinder and V6 engines that do not idle as smoothly as a V8, and luxury cars. A third group is active: on Lexus, Toyota and Honda applications the engine computer energises a solenoid that applies vacuum to a chamber inside the mount, softening it at idle. Three different parts, not three prices for one - and position matters as much, because an upper torque strut controls fore-and-aft engine movement rather than carrying weight.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used engine mount depends on several factors:

We quote rather than publish prices, and on a mount the number moves with construction and position, not size. A rubber block, a fluid-filled hydro-mount and an active vacuum-controlled mount are three separate parts, and a torque strut is different again from the mount under the engine. Budget labour separately: the engine must be supported before a mount comes off, access is awkward on transverse front-drive engines, and shops often add fasteners or an exhaust gasket. Send the VIN and say which position failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fit a plain rubber mount where a hydraulic one was?

Common, and it has a cost. Hydro-mounts are expensive, so a solid rubber mount gets offered as the more affordable alternative - but it cannot damp vibration the way the original did, and the trade guidance is blunt that you may not be happy with how the car feels afterwards. If your car left the factory fluid-filled, ask us for the same construction.

What is an active engine mount, and can I put an ordinary one in its place?

An active mount changes its own stiffness - the engine computer energises a solenoid to apply vacuum to a chamber inside it, softening the mount at idle. Delphi also built MagneRide mounts whose fluid stiffens under an electric current. A passive mount cannot respond to any of that, so idle vibration and boom return - and it is not invisible to the car. Ford patented a diagnostic that commands the mount through its modes and reads chassis vibration to judge it.

How do I know the mount is the problem and not something else?

Have it confirmed before you buy - a clunk on gear engagement has several possible homes. A shop inspects mounts for cracked or broken brackets, loose and missing bolts, collapsed rubber and, on hydro-mounts, fluid leaks, then checks for separation with a pry bar. The confirming test loads the engine lightly in gear against the brakes and watches how far it moves. On an active mount, add one suspect: lost vacuum to the mount.

Should I replace all the engine mounts at once?

Inspect them all, then replace what has failed - the labour overlaps because the engine is already supported. Mounts are seldom checked unless there is an obvious problem, and get overlooked even when the engine or transmission is replaced. A mount that has let go overstresses radiator and heater hoses, wiring connectors and the exhaust while it fails.

Is a used engine mount a false economy when the rubber is as old as mine?

Age counts as much as mileage on this part. A US patent on engine mount compounds states that the ageing and high temperature resistance of natural rubber vulcanizates are poor, limiting the effective life of such parts, and that mounts on modern engines must withstand up to 150 C for 1,000 to 5,000 hours. Another notes heat-induced mount failure is a known problem where airflow through the engine bay is poor.

Does a used engine mount just bolt on, or is there a set-up step?

There is a set-up step on many cars. Ford bulletin 20-2215, for idle vibration on the 2020 Escape 1.5L EcoBoost, has the technician leave the mount-to-frame bolts hand tight, rock the powertrain front to back to neutralize the mounts, and only then torque them, and it discards the old mount fasteners for new ones. Ask your installer whether your vehicle has a neutralization procedure.

How bad is it to keep driving on a loose or broken engine mount?

Ford has put the worst case in writing. Recall 20S72, covering certain 2020-2021 Explorer and Aviator vehicles whose front right-hand engine mount bolts and nuts may be loose, says a loose powertrain mount may cause noise and vibration leading to oil leak and engine damage, and could result in potential axle disconnect from the engine and loss of power. Ford told those owners to book the repair as soon as practicable.

My engine leaks oil onto the mount. Will that ruin the replacement too?

Fix the leak in the same visit. Mounts use natural rubber for its dynamic properties, meaning good tensile, modulus and spring rate, and natural rubber is the wrong material for oil: published research on rubber compounds notes it struggles to perform in oil-containing environments because of its non-polar molecular structure. A used mount dropped into a live oil leak is being attacked from the day it goes on.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
