About Used Audi A4 Parts
The Audi A4 is a compact luxury sport sedan (and Avant wagon) whose used-parts fitment turns on the engine code and the exact generation, not the model year — a 2.0T from the wrong generation won't simply drop in. Match by VIN and engine code, and confirm quattro vs front-wheel drive and the transmission type before you order an engine or gearbox.
Generations & fitment boundaries
The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.
- 2009–2016 (B8 (incl. B8.5 facelift)) — The B8-generation A4 sedan/Avant. Audi ran a mid-cycle B8.5 refresh partway through, so give the full VIN rather than just "B8" — trim and hardware changed within the run.
- 2017–present (B9 (incl. B9 facelift)) — The B9-generation A4 — a new platform with different engine calibration, wiring and electronics than the B8. Do not cross B8 and B9 parts; order by the generation the donor actually is.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart
Most used A4s you'll shop run the 2.0T EA888 turbocharged four, but "it's a 2.0T" is not enough to order by. The EA888 was built in distinct generations (commonly referred to as Gen 1 / Gen 2 / Gen 3) with different engine codes, internals and engine management, so a 2.0T from one generation will not simply bolt in for another. Read the stamped engine code off your car and off any donor and match those, not the displacement.
Early B8 A4s were also offered with a 3.2-liter V6 — a completely different engine and drivetrain from the 2.0T four, so parts never interchange between them. If your donor and your car don't share the same engine family, nothing from the intake to the transmission is a safe assumption.
The A4's transmission is a real fitment trap. Front-wheel-drive automatic A4s used a multitronic CVT, while quattro cars used a ZF Tiptronic automatic or an S tronic dual-clutch — these are entirely different gearboxes and are not interchangeable. A used transmission must match both your drivetrain (quattro vs FWD) and your exact transmission type, so confirm all three from the VIN/build data before ordering.
Known issues that drive used-part demand
- Oil consumption on the B8-era 2.0T: some EA888 engine codes in this era have a reputation for higher-than-normal oil use tied to the pistons/rings. It's code-specific, so don't assume every A4 2.0T is affected — have any oil-use, low-oil-light or misfire complaint diagnosed by a mechanic before deciding you need a long block.
- Direct injection means intake-valve carbon build-up is a known maintenance item on these turbo fours over time. Rough idle or misfires can point there rather than to a bad engine — get it diagnosed first.
- The EA888 is timing-chain driven, so have any timing-cover rattle at cold start looked at professionally before buying a used engine on the assumption the old one is done.
Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.
Most-requested used A4 parts
The parts buyers ask us for most on the A4 are complete used 2.0T engines and long blocks, transmissions (make sure you specify multitronic vs Tiptronic vs S tronic and quattro vs FWD), turbochargers, and electrical modules. On any control module, expect coding to your specific car. Give us the full 17-digit VIN plus the stamped engine code and we'll match the right generation and drivetrain before you commit.

Used Audi A4 Parts — FAQ
What's the difference between an Audi A4 B8 and B9, and does it matter for parts?
It matters a lot. The B8 A4 (roughly 2009–2016, with a B8.5 mid-cycle refresh) and the B9 A4 (2017 on) are different platforms with different engine calibration, wiring and electronics, so engine, transmission and module parts generally do not cross between them. Order by the generation your donor actually is, matched to your VIN.
Are all Audi A4 2.0T engines the same?
No — this is the most common A4 used-parts mistake. The 2.0T belongs to the EA888 family, built in more than one generation (Gen 1/2/3) with different engine codes and internals, so one won't simply drop in for another. Match the stamped engine code — not the "2.0T" badge — to the donor, and confirm quattro vs front-wheel drive too.
How do I know which transmission my A4 needs?
Check whether your car is quattro all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, then which gearbox it has — FWD automatic A4s used a multitronic CVT, while quattro cars used a ZF Tiptronic automatic or an S tronic dual-clutch. These aren't interchangeable, so a used transmission has to match your drivetrain and transmission type from the VIN/build data.
Which Audi A4 model years are known for burning oil?
Two settlement groups. One covered the 2009 and 2010 A4 and A5 and the 2011 A4, A5 and Q5 built with the CAEB 2.0T engine code; a later piston-related settlement covered 2012-2014 A4, A5, A6 and Q5 models with the 2.0-liter turbo. It is engine-code specific rather than every A4 2.0T, so have an oil-use complaint diagnosed before deciding the long block is finished.
Will a 2012 Audi A4 headlight fit a 2014 A4?
No. Cars.com reported that Audi restyled the A4 for 2013 with new front and rear bumpers, headlights, taillights, hood and front grille, so a pre-2013 front end and a 2013-on front end are different parts even though both are B8-generation cars. For lighting, bumpers, hood and grille, match the donor's model year rather than assuming any B8 A4 panel fits.
Will a used front passenger seat work in a 2017-2020 Audi A4?
Treat it as an airbag job. Audi's recall 74E3 bulletin (NHTSA 21V874000) covers 2017-2020 A4 Sedan and allroad cars and says the passenger occupant detection system is integrated in the front passenger seat heating and controls the passenger airbag, which a fault in the connecting wire can switch off. The remedy replaces the heating mat or seat cover and then needs PODS basic settings, so check the donor's recall status and use a qualified shop.
