About This Valve Cover

On a modern engine a used valve cover is rarely just a lid. The same part is called a cam cover or rocker cover depending on the engine, and current designs are moulded plastic shells that receive electrical components such as coil-on-plug units and sensors, with the wiring embedded in the cover itself. Many also house the crankcase-ventilation oil separator: an internal chamber with baffles that lengthen the flow path so oil droplets drop out of the blow-by before it is drawn back to the intake. Some go further, with a bearing carrier moulded into the cover forming the camshaft bearings and acting as the reference body positioning the camshaft against the valve gear. That is why a cover can be a significant part, and why a torn PCV diaphragm often means a complete new cover rather than a valve. Send the VIN and tell us which provisions yours needs.

Because every valve cover quote is matched to your Ford Escape by VIN, you get a part that fits the first time and keeps your repair on budget.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used valve cover depends on several factors:

A valve cover quote is driven less by the shell than by how much of the module comes with it. Cast and moulded-plastic covers price differently, but the big variables are what stays attached: coil packs and embedded wiring, cam or oil sensors, the PCV assembly and its oil separator, the filler cap and, on carrier-type designs, the camshaft bearing hardware. Flange and PCV-diaphragm condition matter too, while freight is rarely the issue on a part this light. We do not display prices: send your VIN for a written quote and review the terms before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why replace the whole cover instead of just the PCV valve?

Because on many engines the PCV valve and its diaphragm are built into the cover rather than screwed into it. Where that is so, the manufacturer's remedy is a complete new cover — which is why aftermarket replacement diaphragms exist at all. If the shell is also cracked or leaking at the flange, the cover is the cleaner repair.

Is a whistle at idle really the valve cover?

It can be, but confirm before ordering. A compromised crankcase-ventilation cover hisses or whistles at idle and usually brings rough idle or stalling plus lean fuel-trim codes such as P0171. Other intake leaks sound the same, so have a shop smoke-test it first.

Why do plastic valve covers fail?

Heat and age. Plastic and composite covers turn brittle under continuous engine heat, and once the shell or the ventilation circuit is compromised, unregulated crankcase pressure starts forcing oil past gaskets and the main crankshaft seal. A sound original-equipment cover often beats a bargain aftermarket one, which has a reputation for warping.

Does a used cover come with the coils and sensors?

It depends on the donor, so tell us what you need rather than assuming. Modern covers are built to receive coil-on-plug units and sensors, and some have the harness moulded in. Count the ports, connector positions and mounting bosses on your own cover against the photos before committing.

Can I fit a valve cover myself?

Have a shop do it. Cover bolts are torque-critical, especially into plastic, the sealing face has to be spotless, and on covers that carry the camshaft bearings the fitment sets camshaft position against the valve gear — that is timing work, not trim work. Never reuse the old gasket, grommets or tube seals.

Oil in my spark plug wells - do the ignition coils need replacing?

Usually, and the leak has to be cured first or you will buy them twice. Delphi names an oil leak from a failed valve cover gasket as the most likely source of oil building up around and damaging both the ignition coil and the spark plug, says the root cause has to be addressed to avoid repeat failures, and recommends replacing all the plugs at the same time as a coil.

Can I keep driving with a leaking valve cover for a while?

It is not a breakdown, but it is not harmless either. Mobil points out that oil escaping a valve cover can contact a hot exhaust manifold and burn, with the smoke drifting into the cabin. Fel-Pro covers the other end of it: low or no oil means high engine temperatures, the remaining oil breaks down and pistons, rings, lifters and bearings wear. Watch the dipstick rather than topping up indefinitely.

Do I need a whole valve cover, or would a new gasket fix it?

It turns on the shell, not the gasket. Fel-Pro's account is that the gasket loses elasticity over time, while covers made in aluminium, magnesium, plastic composite or stamped steel can warp - a tired gasket is a gasket job, a warped or cracked shell is not, and neither is a broken bolt boss. Have the sealing flange checked for flatness before you decide which one to ask us to quote.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
