About Used Kia Sorento Parts

Buying a used Kia Sorento engine or transmission comes down to one question: which engine is in the car? The Sorento went from body-on-frame SUV to unibody crossover in 2011, then changed engines or transmissions again in 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2021, so two Sorentos of similar age take different parts. Send the VIN.

Generations & fitment boundaries

The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.

  • 2003–2009 (1st gen (BL)) — Body-on-frame SUV, replaced in 2011 by a unibody crossover. Parts should not be assumed to cross that line, so send the VIN.
  • 2011–2013 (2nd gen (XM)) — First unibody Sorento. 2.4L four or 3.5L V6, six-speed automatic, front- or all-wheel drive. By 2013 the 2.4 came in both multi-point and direct-injection form, so identify which you have before ordering.
  • 2014–2015 (2nd gen facelift) — The V6 changes from 3.5L to 3.3L direct injection and the 2.4 becomes GDI only.
  • 2016–2018 (3rd gen (UM)) — 2.4L GDI, 2.0L turbo GDI or 3.3L V6 GDI, all with a six-speed automatic. The 2.0 turbo appears only in these years.
  • 2019–2020 (3rd gen facelift) — The 2.0 turbo is dropped. The 2.4 keeps the six-speed; the 3.3L V6 moves to an eight-speed.
  • 2021–present (4th gen (MQ4)) — New N3 platform: 2.5L with an eight-speed automatic, 2.5L turbo with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch, 1.6L turbo hybrid and plug-in hybrid with a six-speed automatic.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart

The four-cylinder question comes first, because the 2.4 was sold in two injection types in the same model year: Kia's own 2013 spec sheet lists it with multi-point injection and direct injection (GDI) optional on some trims. From 2014 it is GDI only. So "2.4L Sorento" is not a specification. The two differ in fuel and induction hardware, and the 2011–2013 years appear on the covered-vehicle lists of both Kia engine settlements, which carry different remedies.

The V6 follows its own path: 3.5L multi-point through 2013, then 3.3L direct injection from 2014 to 2020. Transmissions track the engine, not the badge: six-speed automatic across 2011–2018; from 2019 the 2.4 keeps the six-speed while the 3.3 V6 takes an eight-speed; from 2021 it splits into eight-speed automatic (2.5), eight-speed wet dual-clutch (2.5 turbo) and six-speed automatic (hybrid and PHEV). All are front- or all-wheel drive, so state which when quoting driveline parts.

Known issues that drive used-part demand
  • Bearing wear and engine seizure is the defining Sorento issue: Kia recalled certain 2012–2014 cars for machining errors that could cause premature bearing wear leading to seizure, and certain 2012–2013 cars for engine-compartment fires. Knocking, oil-pressure warnings or a sudden power cap need professional diagnosis first.
  • Later recalls sit elsewhere: a high-pressure fuel pipe damaged or mis-torqued during an earlier engine replacement (certain 2012–2017 cars), brake fluid leaking inside the ABS control unit (certain 2014–2015), and a transmission oil pump fault that can cause loss of drive power (certain 2021–2022). Fuel, brake and ABS work goes to a professional shop; scan before ordering a used transmission or module.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Most-requested used Sorento parts

Engines and transmissions are the most-requested Sorento parts, and both are ordered by powertrain, not model year: give us the year, whether the four-cylinder is multi-point or direct injection, or which V6, turbo, 2.5 or hybrid unit it is, plus drive type and transmission type. The full VIN settles it, and it is also what Kia needs if you are checking the car against an engine settlement before spending anything.

Why Buy Used Kia Sorento Parts?

A used part can be a lower-cost alternative to new OEM for a Kia Sorento. Compare condition, fitment, warranty and return terms, shipping, and final price before deciding whether an option is right for your repair.

  • Vehicle details — include your VIN or full Kia Sorento configuration for fitment review.
  • Terms before purchase — review the written warranty and return terms.
  • Shipping options — confirm the applicable method, timing, and cost for your destination.

Used Kia Sorento Parts — FAQ

Is my Kia Sorento covered by a Kia engine settlement?

It depends on the engine and VIN, not the year alone, because there are two separate programmes. Kia's first engine settlement lists 2011–2019 Sorento among the covered Kia models and names the 2.0L and 2.4L Theta II GDI as the engines at issue; its remedy is a lifetime warranty for short-block assembly repairs to original and subsequent owners, plus free knock-sensor software and reimbursement of past repairs. The settlement announced in 2022 lists an overlapping range, 2011–2013 Sorento, on its covered-vehicle list, with a 15-year/150,000-mile extended warranty rather than a lifetime one. Kia or the settlement administrator can confirm what your VIN qualifies for; coverage follows the vehicle, not a used engine bought from us.

Will a 2013 Sorento engine fit a 2014 Sorento?

Treat it as no. For 2014 the V6 changed from 3.5L multi-point to 3.3L direct injection and the four-cylinder became direct-injection only, so neither carries over cleanly. Send the VIN and we will match the engine your car actually uses.

Does my Sorento have a six-speed, eight-speed or dual-clutch transmission?

Sorentos from 2011 through 2018 use a six-speed automatic. From 2019 the 2.4 keeps the six-speed while the 3.3L V6 uses an eight-speed. From 2021 the 2.5 uses an eight-speed automatic, the 2.5 turbo an eight-speed wet dual-clutch, and the hybrid and plug-in hybrid a six-speed. Confirm the engine and drive type before ordering.

Why can't I find parts listed for a 2010 Kia Sorento?

Because Kia skipped that model year here. EPA's list of 2010 Kia models has no Sorento on it at all, and the redesigned unibody Sorento appears as a 2011, with the 2.4L four or 3.5L V6 and a six-speed automatic. If your paperwork says 2010, read the tenth character of the VIN, which federal rules make the model-year code, then order as a 2009 body-on-frame car or as a 2011 crossover.

Is my 2013 Sorento's 2.4L the multi-port engine or the GDI?

Decode the VIN. NHTSA's free VIN decoder returns the engine model and the fuel injection type for a Sorento: a 2013 2.4 comes back as DOHC MPI Theta-II with multipoint fuel injection, naming the injection type outright. The underhood emission control label will not settle it, because federal rules make that label carry engine displacement, not injection type. Send the VIN with your quote request and we match it.

Did the Kia Sorento ever come with a manual transmission?

Yes, in one narrow slice. EPA lists a six-speed manual only with the two-wheel-drive four-cylinder Sorento, in the second-generation years through 2014; every 2015 listing is automatic, as is every V6 and every four-wheel-drive car. So a manual Sorento is a 2WD 2.4, and its clutch, flywheel and gearbox all come from that one combination - an automatic car's parts will not stand in.

Can I use a 2.4 GDI engine out of a Kia Optima in my Sorento?

Not on year alone. Kia's Theta II recall bulletin does put them in one family and one document, covering 2011-2014 Optima with the 2.4 GDI and 2.0 turbo GDI and 2012-2014 Sorento with the 2.4 GDI. Family is not fitment, though. The Sorento's 2.4 was also sold as a multi-port engine in the earlier years, so year, injection type and 2WD or AWD driveline all have to match the car it is going into.
