About Used Mazda CX-5 Parts

The CX-5 is Mazda's best-selling compact SUV, so used engines, transmissions and AWD driveline parts are plentiful — and unlike the Mazda3 it launched all-Skyactiv from the start, with no older MZR engines to trip over. That makes CX-5 fitment cleaner: match the generation (KE vs KF), the exact 2.5 (naturally-aspirated versus the later 2.5T turbo), and front-drive versus i-Activ all-wheel drive. Read the code stamped on the block and check your VIN — 'it's a 2.5' isn't enough to guarantee the right long block or transmission.

Generations & fitment boundaries

The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.

  • 2013–2016 (KE (1st gen)) — Launched entirely on Skyactiv-G — a 2.0L base, with a 2.5L four added for 2014. Front-drive or i-Activ all-wheel drive, with the conventional 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic (a 6-speed manual on early base cars). A 2.2L Skyactiv-D diesel was offered in some markets.
  • 2017–present (KF (2nd gen)) — Redesigned on the KF platform, still Skyactiv-G, with the naturally-aspirated 2.5 as the mainstay and a turbocharged 2.5T added to the range for 2019. Front-drive or i-Activ AWD, conventional automatic. The KE-to-KF change is the CX-5's main generation wall — confirm the platform before sourcing.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart

Because the CX-5 was Skyactiv from launch, there's no MZR-versus-Skyactiv trap here the way there is on the Mazda3 — but you still order by the stamped engine code, which reads as a PE-family code on the 2.0 and a PY-family code on the 2.5. The catch on later cars is the turbo: the KF's 2.5T is a different engine from the naturally-aspirated 2.5 — different internals and fuel/turbo hardware — so a naturally-aspirated 2.5 will not stand in for a 2.5T or the reverse. Same '2.5' badge, two non-interchangeable long blocks; read the code.

The transmission is a CX-5 buying advantage. Where many compact SUVs use a CVT, the Skyactiv CX-5 keeps a conventional torque-converter automatic — the 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive, not a CVT. Used CX-5 automatics are therefore serviceable, well-understood units rather than sealed CVTs. Match the transmission to the exact engine and, critically, to the drivetrain: a CX-5 sourced as front-drive does not carry the rear differential, propshaft or AWD-specific hardware an i-Activ AWD car needs.

Known issues that drive used-part demand
  • Skyactiv-G engines run very high compression and direct injection, so over high mileage they can build carbon on the intake valves, showing up as a rough cold-start or misfire. It's a maintenance pattern, not a recall — have a mechanic assess it; a sound used engine is still a good swap.
  • If you're eyeing a diesel CX-5, source it carefully: the 2.2 Skyactiv-D was a limited, market-specific option, so donor supply is thin and it must be matched exactly. Buy any used automatic tested and VIN-matched to your engine and drivetrain — it's the costliest part to get wrong.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Used Mazda CX-5 Parts — FAQ

Does the CX-5 use a CVT?

No — and that's a reason to shop the CX-5 with confidence. Where many compact SUVs use a CVT, Mazda kept a conventional 6-speed torque-converter automatic (Skyactiv-Drive) on the CX-5. Used CX-5 automatics are generally serviceable, well-understood units — just match the transmission to your exact engine and to front-drive versus i-Activ AWD.

Is the CX-5 2.5 turbo the same engine as the regular 2.5?

No. The 2.5T turbo added to the second-generation (KF) cars is a different engine from the naturally-aspirated 2.5 — different internals and fuel/turbo hardware — so they don't substitute for each other. Confirm which 2.5 you have by the engine code before sourcing a used long block or transmission.

Will a used engine from another CX-5 fit mine?

If it's the same generation and the same 2.5 (or 2.0), yes — the CX-5 was Skyactiv from launch, so there's no MZR-versus-Skyactiv trap. What breaks fitment is crossing the KE-to-KF generation change (2017), mixing the naturally-aspirated 2.5 with the 2.5T, or ignoring FWD versus i-Activ AWD. Match by stamped engine code and VIN.

Which 2019 CX-5 trims came with the 2.5 turbo?

The Grand Touring Reserve and the Signature. Mazda's 2019 CX-5 specifications put the Skyactiv-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo in those two trims, rated 227 horsepower on regular fuel and 250 on premium, while Sport, Touring and Grand Touring run the naturally aspirated 2.5. They are not tunes of one engine: the turbo runs 10.5 to 1 compression against the 13.0 to 1 of the 2.5.

Does a 2018 CX-5 2.5 have cylinder deactivation mine lacks?

If yours is older, yes. Mazda introduced cylinder deactivation on the Skyactiv-G 2.5 for 2018, on the CX-5 and the Mazda6, and its 2019 CX-5 specifications list the engine as a 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve four with cylinder deactivation. That is hardware and control the earlier 2.5 does not carry, so a same-size engine from either side of that change is not automatically the same part.

Was the CX-5 diesel sold in the US, and what fits it?

Briefly. Mazda brought the Skyactiv-D 2.2 to the US on the CX-5 Signature with all-wheel drive, rated 168 horsepower and 290 lb-ft, and the EPA's CX-5 listings carry that diesel for 2019 and none the following year. A diesel CX-5 needs diesel-specific parts, from the engine to the fuel and emissions hardware, off the same car; nothing on a gasoline 2.5 CX-5 substitutes.

Is a front-drive CX-5 transmission the same as the AWD one?

No. In Mazda's 2019 CX-5 specifications the naturally aspirated 2.5 runs a 4.325 final drive on front-drive and 4.624 on i-Activ all-wheel drive behind the same six-speed Skyactiv-Drive, and the AWD turbo trims are different again at 4.411. The AWD car also carries transfer and rear driveline hardware a front-drive car never had, so a front-drive transaxle is the wrong ratio even where it bolts up.
