Quick answer: Injectors fail three ways β€” deposits that restrict flow, a coil that shorts, and a unit that leaks β€” and only the first can sometimes be cleaned. Rule out plugs, coils, compression and leaking valves first β€” they mimic an injector misfire. If confirmed, buy a flow-tested full set with new seals: see our fuel injector fitment page, then request a VIN-based quote.

Fuel injectors spray a precise amount of fuel into your engine. When one clogs, leaks, or fails electrically, you get misfires, rough running and poor economy. A tested set of used injectors is an affordable fix on many engines.

Signs of bad fuel injectors

  • Rough or uneven idle and engine misfires
  • Hard starting or hesitation under acceleration
  • Noticeably worse fuel economy
  • Check-engine light for misfire or lean/rich codes
  • Fuel smell or visible leaks (failed seals)

How injectors actually fail

An injector is electro-mechanical, so it fails both ways. Restriction is the common one: everything the engine burns passes through the injector, so carbon and varnish narrow it, cutting flow and spoiling the spray pattern. Electrical failure is different β€” the coil is fine wire in thin enamel insulation that constant heat cycling breaks down, shorting the coil and dropping its resistance. Leaking is the third: internal O-rings let fuel seep out where the connector meets the body, often showing only as a fuel smell at start-up.

So a coil can pass a resistance check and still fail under load, and an injector leaking externally has no field fix β€” it is replaced, not repaired.

What used fuel injectors cost

Used injectors are an economical repair, and buying a matched set from a similar engine helps balance flow across cylinders. Plan to replace the seals/O-rings on install, and have the set flow-tested or cleaned when possible.

Is cleaning a real alternative to replacing?

It depends which cleaning. A bottle in the tank or an on-car rail flush is rarely effective once an injector is restricted enough to cause a drivability symptom, and the concentrated solvents in rail machines can damage a catalytic converter. Off-car ultrasonic cleaning with flow testing works: the injectors come out, are cycled electrically inside an ultrasonic bath, and are flow- and leak-tested before and after.

It is not a guarantee β€” injectors that fail after a second ultrasonic bath are treated as defective, and nothing cleans a shorted coil. Leave fuel-system work to a qualified shop.

How to buy the right injectors

  1. Match by VIN and part number: injectors are calibrated to your specific engine β€” search by VIN for the correct flow rate and connector.
  2. Buy a full matched set rather than a single injector when possible.
  3. Replace seals and O-rings at install to prevent leaks.
  4. Confirm testing/cleaning and the warranty before buying.

Why they are sold as sets β€” and what GDI adds

The engine computer trims fuel by bank, not by cylinder, so it cannot compensate for one restricted injector. The result is a cylinder-to-cylinder imbalance: poor idle, higher emissions, worse economy. That is why a serviced set is judged on how closely its injectors flow to each other β€” ask for the flow sheet, not the word "cleaned".

Direct injection adds a step people skip. A GDI injector seals against the combustion chamber with a Teflon-based seal, and once an injector comes out of the head those seals are replaced on every injector on that rail, not just the one you touched. A reused seal lets combustion gas past and erodes the injector bore. Identify your injectors from the engine code in your VIN.
