About Used BMW Parts

BMW's 3 Series, 5 Series and X5 are premium vehicles where new parts are expensive — making quality used BMW engines, transmissions and electronic modules a major saving. Fitment varies by chassis code, so VIN matching is essential.

  • Popular models: 3 Series, 5 Series, X5
  • Big savings vs. new on engines & modules
  • Chassis-code specific — VIN match essential
Common platforms & generations in salvage

On a BMW the fitment key is the chassis code, not the model year, because a single model year can span two chassis. The volume sedans run in clear generations: the 3 Series went E90 → F30 → G20 and the 5 Series went E60 → F10 → G30, and the X5 SUV ran E53 → E70 → F15 → G05. A 2011 3 Series, for example, can be an outgoing E90 or an incoming F30, so read the chassis code and give us the full VIN and build month.

BMW's used engines are mostly the modern N- and B-series: the N20/N26 turbo four, the N52 naturally-aspirated six, the N54 and N55 turbo sixes, and the newer B58 turbo six. Same displacement is not the same engine here either — order by the engine code and the chassis code together, matched to the donor's build date.

Known BMW failure patterns to check
  • Early N20/N26 turbo fours were built with plastic timing-chain guides that can wear and fail, letting the chain skip and damage the engine — a defect that drew a class action. On a used N20/N26, confirm the updated chain components or have a mechanic inspect before buying, and have any timing-related noise diagnosed professionally.
  • The twin-turbo N54 six is well known for high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failures — the subject of a recall and an extended warranty — along with wastegate rattle. On a used N54, budget for these known items and confirm the history.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Fitment traps that break interchange
  • Match by chassis code, not year alone — a 2011 3 Series can be an outgoing E90 or an incoming F30, and the two don't share all parts. Read the chassis code and confirm by VIN.
  • A used DME/ECU that matches the model isn't enough: it must match the part number and be coded to the car's immobilizer system, or it won't start (see coding below).
Where to find the engine code & VIN

Use the full 17-digit VIN plus the build month to pin the chassis code and engine code, since those are what actually determine fitment on a BMW. Read the chassis code (the E/F/G designation) off the car, and give us the VIN when you request a quote so we match engine and chassis together.

Which BMW parts need coding after install

A used BMW DME/ECU is not plug-and-play. To run, a replacement DME has to match the correct part number and be coded to the car's immobilizer system, or the engine won't start. Many BMW modules — the DME plus the cluster, keys and some comfort or driver-assist units — need coding or programming after install, so budget for a shop with BMW software. Mechanical parts generally bolt in without coding.

Why Buy Used BMW Parts?

A used part can be a lower-cost alternative to new OEM, especially for an out-of-warranty BMW. The value depends on correct fitment, condition, warranty and return terms, shipping, and the final price.

  • Vehicle details — share the VIN or exact BMW configuration for fitment review.
  • Terms before purchase — review warranty and return terms in writing.
  • Condition information — ask for available photos, mileage, and inspection details.
  • Shipping options — confirm options for the part size and destination.

Used BMW Parts — FAQ

Does a used BMW ECU/DME need coding?

Yes — a used BMW DME is not plug-and-play. It must match the right part number and be coded to the car's immobilizer system with BMW software, or the engine won't start. Budget for a shop with BMW coding tools; most mechanical parts install without coding.

How do I match a used BMW engine or module — by year?

By chassis code, not year alone. Read the chassis code (E90/F30/G20 and the like) and give us the full 17-digit VIN and build month, because a single model year can span two chassis and the parts don't all cross.

What are the known trouble spots on used BMW engines?

The common modern ones are N20/N26 timing-chain-guide wear and N54 high-pressure-fuel-pump problems. On a used example, confirm the relevant history or updated parts and have a mechanic inspect before buying.

My BMW is a 328i - does that mean a 2.8-liter engine?

No, the badge is a trim name, not a displacement. EPA lists the 2011 328i with a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter six, and the 2013 328i with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four and an eight-speed automatic - same badge, different engine and gearbox. Order by engine code and chassis code together, and send the VIN and build month with your quote request.

Can I use parts from an xDrive BMW on my rear-drive one?

Not the driveline parts. BMW xDrive splits torque between the axles through an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in a transfer case, and drive runs forward along a propeller shaft to the front axle and out through drive shafts to the front wheels. So an xDrive car carries a transfer case, front propeller shaft and front drive shafts a rear-drive car never had. Match drivetrain and chassis code.

Is the water pump on a 2012-2016 BMW 328i under recall?

Check the VIN before buying one. NHTSA campaign 24V608000 covers BMWs including the 2012-2016 328i, whose water-pump electrical connector may be poorly sealed, take on water and short circuit, raising the risk of fire. Dealers inspect and replace the pump and connector and fit a protective shield free of charge, so a used pump does not close it.

Are used BMW 3 Series airbags affected by Takata recalls?

Many are, so treat it as a recall question first. NHTSA campaign 20V018000 covers passenger inflators on early-2000s 3 Series and 20V017000 covers driver inflators on the 2007-2013 328i and 335i among others - non-desiccated inflators that can degrade and explode, throwing metal fragments. Dealers replace them free, and SRS work belongs with a technician.
