About Used BMW X5 Parts

The X5 is BMW's midsize SUV, so used engines, transfer cases and electronic modules save heavily over dealer parts — but fitment turns on the chassis code and build date, not the model year, and the X5 rides on its own SUV chassis codes (not the sedan's). Read the chassis code (E70, F15 or G05), send the full VIN and build month, and match the exact engine code, because two same-year X5s can be different hardware.

Generations & fitment boundaries

The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.

  • 2007–2013 (E70 (second gen)) — The naturally-aspirated N52 six, the turbo N55 six, the N62 then N63 twin-turbo V8 (xDrive50i) and the M57 diesel (xDrive35d) covered the range. This is the E70 SUV — don't assume any sedan part carries over; the X5 body and driveline are their own.
  • 2014–2018 (F15 (third gen)) — The N55 turbo six (xDrive35i), the N63 twin-turbo V8 (xDrive50i) and a diesel (xDrive35d) were the volume drivetrains. Early and late F15 builds differ, so match by build date, not just the year.
  • 2019–present (G05 (fourth gen)) — The B58 turbo six (xDrive40i) and a newer twin-turbo V8 (xDrive50i/M) power the range. G05 parts are a clean break from F15 — don't assume an F15 part carries into a 2019+ X5 even where it looks similar.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart

"X5 engine" spans gas sixes, a twin-turbo V8 and a diesel across three generations, so order by the engine code, not the badge. The E70 runs the N52 NA six, the N55 turbo six, the N62/N63 V8 and the M57 diesel; the F15 runs the N55 six, the N63 V8 and a diesel; the G05 runs the B58 six and a twin-turbo V8. A six-cylinder xDrive35i and a V8 xDrive50i are entirely different drivetrains and don't cross, and the diesel is its own long block and after-treatment.

Almost every US X5 is xDrive all-wheel drive, which makes the transfer case, front driveshaft/axle and propshaft defining parts — and these are matched to the chassis and drivetrain, not shared across generations. If you need a transfer case or driveline part, confirm the chassis code, engine and build date by VIN first.

BMW revises hardware mid-generation, so matching by year alone gets the wrong part. Match the chassis code plus the build month, because an early and a late build of the same chassis can differ. Send the full 17-digit VIN and build date for any engine, transfer case or module.

Known issues that drive used-part demand
  • The N63 twin-turbo V8 (xDrive50i) can use oil and wear valve-stem seals, among other hot-vee items. Have a mechanic check oil consumption and service history on any used N63 X5 before you commit.
  • On the diesel X5, emissions after-treatment parts (DPF, EGR and related sensors) are their own service and cost area, and used emissions parts aren't legal everywhere — CARB/state rules differ. Route any diesel emissions diagnosis and repair to a qualified diesel shop.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Most-requested used X5 parts

The two questions we get most are "will an xDrive35i engine fit my xDrive50i?" and "does a used BMW ECU need coding?" The engine answer is no — the 35i runs a six and the 50i runs a V8, so match the exact engine code. The DME answer is that a used engine computer is not plug-and-play: it must match the correct part number and be synchronized to your car's immobilizer, or the engine won't start. Budget for a shop with BMW software; most mechanical parts, including the transfer case, bolt in without coding. Send your VIN, chassis code and build date and we'll match a tested unit.

Why Buy Used BMW X5 Parts?

A used part can be a lower-cost alternative to new OEM for a BMW X5. Compare condition, fitment, warranty and return terms, shipping, and final price before deciding whether an option is right for your repair.

  • Vehicle details — include your VIN or full BMW X5 configuration for fitment review.
  • Terms before purchase — review the written warranty and return terms.
  • Shipping options — confirm the applicable method, timing, and cost for your destination.

Used BMW X5 Parts — FAQ

How do I match a used BMW X5 engine, transfer case or module — by year?

By chassis code and build date, not year alone. Read the chassis code (E70, F15 or G05) and send the full 17-digit VIN and build month, because BMW makes running changes mid-generation and two same-year X5s can be different hardware. For a transfer case, also confirm the engine and drivetrain.

Does a used BMW X5 ECU/DME need coding?

Yes — a used DME is not plug-and-play. It has to match the correct part number and be synchronized to your car's immobilizer with BMW software, or the engine won't start. Budget for a shop with BMW coding tools; mechanical parts like the transfer case install without coding.

Is a used X5 with the N63 V8 risky?

The N63 twin-turbo V8 can use oil and wear valve-stem seals, so have a mechanic check the oil consumption and service history before buying. It does not interchange with the six-cylinder or diesel X5 — match the exact engine code and build date.

Is a used front driveshaft safe to buy for a 2011-2013 BMW X5?

Check the recall first. NHTSA campaign 17V138000 covers 2011-2013 X5s and 2011-2014 X6s where water and debris can enter the front driveshaft universal joint, wear it out and fail it, which stops the front wheels being driven; BMW replaces the front driveshaft free of charge. A used shaft from an unremedied donor of those years carries the same design, so confirm the donor's campaign status.

Is there a rear-wheel-drive BMW X5, and does it change driveline parts?

Yes - not every US X5 is an xDrive. EPA's record for the 2014 X5 sDrive35i lists it as Rear-Wheel Drive with a 3.0-liter turbo six and an eight-speed automatic. A rear-drive X5 has no transfer case, no front driveshaft and no front axle, so none of those parts belong on it. Confirm sDrive or xDrive by VIN before ordering any driveline part, transmission included.

Does an X5 xDrive40e have the same six-cylinder as an xDrive35i?

No - the 40e is a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid. EPA records the 2016 X5 xDrive40e as a plug-in hybrid with a 2.0-liter turbo four and an eight-speed automatic, while the 2016 xDrive35i is a 3.0-liter turbo six. The badge number does not track displacement here, and the 40e carries a high-voltage system, so work near it belongs with a technician trained for it.

Is my X5 4.8i's V8 the same engine as an X5 xDrive50i's?

No, and the badge change hides it. EPA lists the 2008 X5 4.8i with a 4.8-liter V8 and no turbo, paired with a six-speed automatic, and the 2012 X5 xDrive50i with a 4.4-liter turbo V8 and an eight-speed. Different displacement, different aspiration, different gearbox - inside what owners think of as one generation. Read the engine code off the block and match the build date by VIN.
