About Used Buick Encore Parts

The Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover (2013–2022) built on GM's Gamma platform with a 1.4L turbocharged four and a 6-speed automatic, sharing its mechanicals with the Chevrolet Trax. Critically, it is NOT the same vehicle as the newer Buick Encore GX — that is a different platform with different engines, and parts do not interchange, so confirm exactly which one you have before ordering.

Generations & fitment boundaries

The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.

  • 2013–2022 (Encore (Gamma)) — Subcompact crossover on GM's Gamma platform. 1.4L turbo-four with a 6-speed automatic; FWD or AWD. Shares its platform and much of its mechanicals with the Chevrolet Trax of the same era, which widens the donor pool. A mid-cycle refresh updated styling and interior but kept the same platform and engine family.
  • 2020–present (Encore GX — DIFFERENT vehicle) — Despite the shared name, the Encore GX is a separate, newer model on a different GM platform with different small turbocharged engines — it is not a generation of the Encore. Encore and Encore GX parts do not interchange. If your build sheet or VIN says 'Encore GX,' order Encore GX parts, not Encore parts.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart

The Encore is a 1.4L turbo-four car throughout its run — GM's 1.4L turbo four, revised mid-life, so the earlier and later versions differ in hardware and engine electronics; match the exact engine by model year and RPO code, not just '1.4 turbo.' Because it's turbocharged, treat the turbo, charge piping and cooling as part of the engine job.

The Encore uses a 6-speed automatic across the range; confirm the transmission RPO code and that it's matched to your engine before ordering. Don't assume an Encore GX transmission fits — it's a different drivetrain on a different platform.

Encore came FWD or AWD, and that changes hard parts — a FWD Encore lacks the propshaft, rear differential/coupling and AWD-specific rear-suspension pieces. Verify drivetrain before ordering axles, halfshafts or a transmission.

Known issues that drive used-part demand
  • The GM 1.4L turbo family has documented age-related issues — turbo and cooling-system components and PCV/valve-cover concerns are common talking points on these small turbo fours. On a used engine, get service history and have a shop assess the turbo and cooling system before you buy — treat it as a mechanic-diagnosed item, not an assumed defect.
  • Timing components on the 1.4 turbo are a wear item at higher mileage; verify condition rather than assuming a used engine is fresh.
  • Ordering an Encore GX part for an Encore (or vice versa) is the single most common mis-order on this nameplate because of the shared name — always confirm the exact model, not just 'Encore.'

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Most-requested used Encore parts

Most-requested used Encore parts we quote are the 1.4L turbo engine (specify model year and revision by RPO), the turbocharger, the 6-speed automatic by RPO code, and AWD driveline parts. A used ECM/PCM on a GM vehicle isn't plug-and-play — it generally has to be programmed to your VIN and the immobilizer/keys re-learned with GM service tools before the vehicle runs right. Send the full VIN, confirm Encore vs Encore GX, and note FWD or AWD so we quote the right part.

Used Buick Encore Parts — FAQ

Are Buick Encore and Encore GX parts the same?

No. Despite the shared name, the Encore GX is a newer, different model on a different GM platform with different small turbocharged engines, so its parts do not interchange with the original Encore. Check your VIN or build sheet and order for the exact model you have.

Do Buick Encore parts interchange with the Chevrolet Trax?

Many mechanical parts do on the same-era cars — the Encore and the Chevrolet Trax share GM's Gamma platform and the 1.4L turbo mechanicals, which widens the used-parts pool. Still match the exact engine and FWD-vs-AWD by VIN.

How do I confirm the exact engine and drivetrain before ordering an Encore part?

Read the GM RPO codes on the Service Parts Identification (SPID) label — usually in the glovebox or console lid — which name the exact engine, transmission and axle ratio, and cross-check the VIN's 8th-digit engine code. Send us the VIN and confirm Encore vs Encore GX so we quote the right part.

Did the 2017 Buick Encore come with two different 1.4 turbos?

Yes. EPA lists one 1.4-liter turbo option for the 2015 Encore, but two for 2016 and two again for 2017: a plain 1.4 turbo, and a 1.4 turbo labelled SIDI for spark-ignition direct injection, which for 2017 also carries stop-start. Both run the six-speed automatic, so the model year on its own will not tell you which engine is in the car.

Is a transmission fluid leak on a 2019 Buick Encore a known recall?

It can be the start-stop accumulator. NHTSA 20V668000 covers certain 2019-2020 Encore along with the Enclave, Cadillac XT4 and XT6, Chevrolet Blazer, Traverse and other GM models where the start-stop accumulator endcap may be missing bolts, which can cause a transmission oil leak and progress to a loss of propulsion. Dealers inspect and replace the accumulator. Confirm whether your Encore was built with stop-start.

Is a used steering column from a 2015 Buick Encore risky?

Check that year's campaign. NHTSA 15V146000 covers certain 2015 Encore and 2015 Chevrolet Trax vehicles built in a narrow window where the steering column assembly housing may contact the power steering printed circuit board and wear it, which can cause a sudden loss of electric power steering assist. GM's remedy was to inspect and, where needed, replace the column assembly. Leave column work to a qualified shop.

Does a used airbag module from a 2015 Encore need anything done?

Its software history matters. NHTSA 17V437000 covers certain 2014-2017 Encore and other GM vehicles already remedied under campaign 16V-651 that may not have received the complete sensing and diagnostic module software update. Without it, some driving conditions could start a diagnostic test during which the frontal airbags and belt pretensioners would not deploy. GM reflashed the module, or replaced it after a deployment.
