About Used Jeep Cherokee Parts
This is the KL Cherokee (2014–2023), Jeep's unibody crossover — not the larger Grand Cherokee and not the classic XJ. Its 9-speed automatic and 2.4L four make a tested, VIN-matched part the safe buy.
Generations & fitment boundaries
The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.
- 2014–2023 (KL (unibody, front-drive-based)) — 2.4L Tigershark four, 3.2L Pentastar V6, and a later 2.0L turbo four; all use the 9-speed 948TE automatic. This is the platform this page covers.
- 1984–2001 (XJ (classic Cherokee) — SEPARATE salvage platform) — The older 4.0L inline-six XJ shares no parts with the KL. Listed only to avoid mis-ordering; do not cross-shop KL and XJ parts.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart
The KL's base engine is the 2.4L Tigershark four (with MultiAir); the upgrade is the 3.2L Pentastar V6, a smaller-displacement sibling of Jeep's familiar 3.6L. A 2.0L turbo four arrived later in the run. All are paired with the ZF-based 948TE 9-speed automatic.
The Cherokee is a front-drive-based platform. 4WD versions use Active Drive I or Active Drive II with a disconnecting rear axle, while the Trailhawk adds Active Drive Lock with a locking rear differential and lower crawl gearing. These 4WD systems are not interchangeable — match the exact system by VIN.
Known issues that drive used-part demand
- The 9-speed 948TE automatic is a costly driveline part to get wrong, so buy a tested unit and make sure the TCM software is current before install.
- 4WD driveline parts vary by system (Active Drive I, Active Drive II and the Trailhawk's Active Drive Lock) — buy them tested and VIN-matched to your exact system rather than assuming they cross.
Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.
Most-requested used Cherokee parts
The parts we're asked to source most for the KL Cherokee are complete used engines (2.4L and 3.2L V6), 9-speed transmissions bought tested and VIN-matched, 4WD driveline components, and front-end body panels. Because the 9-speed and 4WD systems vary by trim, VIN matching is the difference between a bolt-in and a return.

Used Jeep Cherokee Parts — FAQ
Is this the same as a Grand Cherokee or the old Cherokee?
No. This page is the 2014–2023 KL Cherokee, a unibody crossover. The Grand Cherokee is a larger, separate platform, and the classic XJ Cherokee (1984–2001) shares no parts with the KL. Always match by VIN.
Which engine and transmission does my Cherokee have?
KL Cherokees use the 2.4L Tigershark four, the 3.2L Pentastar V6, or a later 2.0L turbo — all with the 9-speed 948TE automatic. Your VIN and the underhood label confirm the exact combination.
Do I need Trailhawk-specific 4WD parts?
If your Cherokee is a Trailhawk, its Active Drive Lock 4WD (locking rear differential, lower crawl ratio) differs from the Active Drive I/II systems on other trims, so axle and transfer components must match your exact 4WD system by VIN.
Will a Chrysler 200 or Renegade nine-speed fit my Cherokee?
Not automatically, even though it is the same family of gearbox. The trade journal Gears reports the ZF9HP48 / 948TE nine-speed is used across the Jeep Cherokee, Renegade and Compass, the Chrysler 200 and Pacifica, the Ram ProMaster City and the Fiat 500X. NHTSA recalled the 2014-2015 Cherokee alongside the 2015 Chrysler 200, 2015 Renegade and 2016 Fiat 500X for one transmission wiring defect. Match the donor unit by VIN.
Will a 2018 Cherokee hood or headlight fit a 2019?
No. Jeep's 2019 Cherokee release describes an all-new front fascia, hood, LED headlamps, daylight running lamps and fog lamps, plus a new lightweight composite liftgate. That restyle splits the KL run: a front end, lamp or liftgate off a 2014-2018 car is not a match for the restyled 2019, even though the platform carried on. Confirm the exact build year by VIN before ordering a panel or lamp.
My Cherokee lost drive and won't hold in Park - is that the PTU?
It may be. NHTSA campaign 20V343 covers 2014-2017 Cherokees fitted with the two-speed power transfer unit, where movement between the PTU's differential input splines and the transmission output shaft can wear input spline teeth off and end engagement between the transmission and the differential. NHTSA describes the result as a loss of drive in motion and a loss of Park when stationary. Have it diagnosed and check the VIN's recall status.
Is a used power liftgate module a safe part for a KL Cherokee?
Check the recall first. NHTSA campaign 23V338 covers 2014-2016 Cherokees because an electrical short in the power liftgate module can cause a fire with the ignition on or off, and owners were told to park outside until repaired. The remedy relocates the module and adds a water shield, so a used module fitted in the original wet location can repeat the failure.
