About This Electric Drive Motor
A used electric drive motor is rarely just a motor. It is usually sold as a drive unit - the traction motor with its reduction gearing and, on a driven axle, the differential, and on an e-axle the power electronics as well, all in one housing. Which of those you are buying is the first thing to settle - fitment and price both hang on it. The second is which end of the car it came from: on a dual-motor vehicle the front and rear units are different parts, sometimes even different motor types - the Tesla Model 3 Performance pairs an AC induction front motor with a partly permanent-magnet rear one. Traction motors also spin far faster than engines - a Nissan Leaf EM57 runs past 10,000 rpm - so bearing and gear condition matter more than the odometer alone. These units sit on a 400 to 1,000 volt system, so source it, then let an HV-trained shop fit it.

Before you order, it helps to read:
Common Signs Your Electric Drive Motor May Need Replacing
- A whine or hum that rises and falls with road speed, not engine speed
- Reduced power, or a hybrid or EV system warning with the car derated
- Grinding or knocking from one axle under load
- Weak or missing regenerative braking on that axle
- Drive motor position-sensor or motor-control trouble codes
- Coolant loss, or a weeping drive unit housing
Symptoms vary by vehicle and driving conditions. Always confirm diagnosis before replacement.
What to Check When Buying a Used Electric Drive Motor
- Pin down what is included: bare motor, motor plus gearing, or a full e-axle
- Specify front or rear - on a dual-motor car those are different part numbers
- Match the part number and the gear ratio, not just year and model
- Ask about the donor vehicle's mileage and any recorded collision damage
- Confirm the resolver or position sensor and its connector are present and undamaged
- Ask whether your platform needs any setup or calibration after fitting
Ask for these details and any available photos before approving a purchase.
What Happens After You Request a Quote
- We review your vehicle and part request
- Provide your VIN or full vehicle details for fitment review
- Review the available condition, warranty, shipping, and price details
- You decide — no obligation to buy
Response time depends on the part, vehicle information supplied, and current sourcing options.

How Pricing Is Determined
Pricing for used electric drive motor depends on several factors:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and engine configuration
- Mileage and overall condition of the donor vehicle
- Supplier location and shipping distance
- Warranty coverage offered
The biggest variable in a used electric drive motor quote is how much of the drive unit you need. A bare motor, a motor with the reduction gearset attached, and a complete e-axle with the differential and power electronics in one housing are three different parts, so tell us which your vehicle uses - and front or rear if it is dual-motor. After that, quotes move on the donor unit's history: mileage, coolant condition, any collision record. Add HV-qualified labour to the budget. Send the VIN and the stored codes. We do not display prices. Request a quote and review the written terms first.
Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a used drive motor come with the gearbox?
Usually. Electric drive units integrate the motor with a reduction gearset, often the differential, and on an e-axle the power electronics too - so what ships is normally an assembly, not a bare motor. Tell us whether you need the whole unit or part of it, and give us the gear ratio if you have it: two units that look identical can be geared differently.
Can I use a front drive unit at the rear, or the other way round?
No - on a dual-motor vehicle treat them as two unrelated parts. Packaging differs, because a front unit shares space with the steering, and the motors themselves can differ: the Tesla Model 3 Performance runs an AC induction motor at the front and a partly permanent-magnet motor at the rear. Even where both ends share a motor family, gearing and part numbers usually differ.
What is the resolver, and why does it matter?
It is the sensor that tells the controller where the rotor is. A permanent-magnet synchronous motor needs absolute rotor position from the moment it starts, because rotor and stator must stay in phase, and getting it wrong makes the motor lurch. Resolvers dominate this job in automotive use; induction motors are less fussy and may use a simpler encoder. A unit with a damaged sensor or broken connector is not usable, so ask for photographs.
Is fitting a used drive motor a job for a normal garage?
Not unless it has HV-trained technicians and the equipment to match. The unit connects to a system typically running at 400 to 1,000 volts through the orange high-voltage cabling, and electrical safety rules restrict work on circuits that have not been de-energised to qualified people. We publish no procedure on purpose. The order is: HV-trained diagnosis, confirm the shop will install it, then buy the part.
My Chevy Volt whines during regen with code P0A46 - do I need a whole drive unit?
Not necessarily. GM bulletin PIP5081L for the 2011-2015 Volt and 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR traces a whistle, scrape or whine while driving, often loudest under regenerative braking and paired with current or history code P0A46, to a separated drive motor B rotor bearing cage - and states the drive unit and motor do not have to come out for that bearing repair. Have it ruled in or out before buying an assembly.
If a drive unit failed with metal debris, what must be cleaned before the replacement?
The cooler and the housing around it. The same GM bearing bulletin states in capitals that the side cover and the transmission cooler must be flushed to prevent recontamination of the new bearing, and that debris found on the rotor or the side of the transmission has to be cleaned out. Drop a sound used unit into a circuit still holding the old one's metal and you can buy the same failure twice.
Jeep 4xe showing P1B0F drive motor position sensor offset - is the motor itself bad?
It can be. Stellantis bulletin 08-144-24 for 2023-2024 Wrangler and Grand Cherokee with the 2.0L plug-in hybrid has dealers read the motor generator unit serial number when P1B0F-00, Drive Motor A Position Sensor Offset Incorrect, is stored, and replace the MGU if the number falls in the listed ranges. Reported symptoms are limp-home mode or a no-start, and the bulletin notes the work is reimbursable under warranty.
My Kona Electric rumbles at speed - does that mean a used traction motor?
Not on its own - Hyundai's published fix is staged. Bulletin 22-EV-001H-1 covers a rumbling noise from the electric traction motor on certain 2019-2021 Kona Electric cars built up to January 19, 2021. It starts with a motor and roll-mount bracket and bolt kit chosen by production date, and goes on to replace the traction motor or reduction gear only if the noise survives that. Have the kit ruled out first.
How is compatibility verified?
