About This ABS Module
An ABS module manages anti-lock braking and, on most vehicles, traction and stability control. What gets sold under this name is really two parts that often bolt together: the hydraulic control unit (HCU), the valve block and pump that modulates brake-line pressure, and the electronic control module mounted to it. On some designs the module unbolts and is replaced on its own; on others the two are one matched assembly, so match your type before you buy. Stability control is why a lookalike unit can be the wrong part: an ESC system brakes individual wheels and cuts engine torque to correct a slide, so a car built without it does not carry the same controller. Because this is a brake system, have a shop scan for codes and confirm the module is the fault first β a used unit often has to be coded to your vehicle, and the hydraulic side may need a scan-tool bleed, which is shop work, not a driveway swap.

Before you order, it helps to read:
Common Signs Your ABS Module May Need Replacing
- ABS and traction warning lights on
- No anti-lock function during hard braking
- A pump that runs constantly or not at all
- Loss of stability-control features
- A steady ESC lamp that may also be flagging traction, trailer-stability or corner-brake faults
- Anti-lock cycling on dry pavement at low speed, or a pedal pulsing when it should not
Symptoms vary by vehicle and driving conditions. Always confirm diagnosis before replacement.
What to Check When Buying a Used ABS Module
- Match the exact ABS part number off the unit's label β traction, stability and adaptive-cruise variants differ even on the same model and year
- Confirm your type: a separate module or a one-piece module-and-HCU assembly
- Match the HCU port layout / brake-line configuration and the electrical connector
- Check stability-control content β US light vehicles built from September 2011 must have ESC; before that it was optional, so an older donor can be anti-lock only
- Photograph the part-number label, connector and line ports before removal
- Have the shop confirm coding and scan-tool ABS-bleed needs before install
Ask for these details and any available photos before approving a purchase.

How Pricing Is Determined
Pricing for used abs module depends on several factors:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and engine configuration
- Mileage and overall condition of the donor vehicle
- Supplier location and shipping distance
- Warranty coverage offered
Two things move an ABS quote: whether your car takes a controller on its own or a combined module-and-hydraulic-unit assembly, and how much it carries: anti-lock only, or stability, traction and adaptive-cruise duties too. Budget the vehicle-side work separately, since coding and a scan-tool bleed are shop labour, and settle the diagnosis before ordering: our return policy does not cover electrical parts once installed, tested or connected. We do not display prices. Request a quote and review the written terms first.
Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace just the controller, not the pump?
On some designs the controller unbolts from the hydraulic unit and is replaced alone; on others the two are one coded assembly, so match your type before ordering. Send the part number off your label and we will say which way yours is built.
Is it the ABS module or a wheel-speed sensor?
Very often it is not the module. An ABS light with the traction or stability light is commonly a wheel-speed sensor, a damaged tone (reluctor) ring or a corroded connector. A scan tool showing all four wheel speeds is the quick tell: they should read alike on a straight road, and one reading differently points at that wheel's sensor, wiring, tone ring or air gap. A used module fixes none of that, so have the fault pinpointed first.
Does a used ABS module need programming after install?
Ask your installer to confirm your model's requirement; many need the replacement coded to the car with a scan tool. There is a hydraulic step too: air is hard to purge from a modulator full of solenoid valves, check valves and dead-end ports, and units without bleed screws need a scan tool to cycle those solenoids during bleeding. Brakes should not go back into service until it is done.
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
Treat it as get-it-looked-at, not ignore-it. Federal brake rules require that indicator to light for an anti-lock electrical failure, and require the service brakes to still stop the vehicle with anti-lock failed, at a longer permitted stopping distance. You keep foundation brakes but lose what stops the wheels locking in a panic stop, so get it diagnosed.
Should I check for an open recall before buying a used ABS module?
Yes, and it takes a minute. NHTSA campaign 23V651000 covers anti-lock brake modules that may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire, and the dealer repair is free. Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before you pay for a used unit.
Could a worn wheel hub bearing be what is setting my ABS fault?
It can be. Timken lists ABS failure, internal or external to the hub bearing assembly, among the symptoms of a worn wheel hub bearing, driven by the excessive movement that end play allows. That is a different repair from a controller, and a used module will not clear a fault the hub is creating. Have the wheel-speed data read first.
Can a weak battery or charging fault set ABS codes that mimic a bad module?
It can, so have the electrical supply checked before you order a controller. Anti-lock controllers carry supply-voltage codes of their own; one common GM system lists a low and a high one. A factory bulletin for a late-model brake control module sends the technician to the battery, the charging system and the module's power and ground terminals first. In one published case a bad ground alone set two ABS codes, cleared with no parts replaced.
How is compatibility verified?
Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.
What if the part does not fit?
Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.
How long does shipping take?
Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
