About This Roof Panel
The first thing to know before pricing a used roof panel: it is not a bolt-on part. Roof panels are welded, bonded or both - Subaru's own procedure is a roof panel total replacement using welds and adhesive - so buying one commits you to bodyshop work, where labor and refinish dominate the bill, not the panel. It is structure, not a lid. Federal Standard 216a exists to reduce deaths and injuries from the roof crushing into the occupant compartment in a rollover, and requires the roof of a vehicle rated at 6,000 lb or less to resist up to three times its own unloaded weight, tested each side. Expect the panel in the donor's color, and expect configuration to matter: solid roof, sunroof aperture, panoramic opening, roof-rail and antenna provisions are all different panels.

Before you order, it helps to read:
Common Signs Your Roof Panel May Need Replacing
- Hail dimpling spread across the panel rather than one repairable dent
- Crushing or creasing after a rollover, usually with the pillars pulled in
- Rust perforation at a roof-rail seam, an antenna base or a sunroof aperture
- A distorted sunroof opening, so the glass no longer seals or indexes
- A deep impact dent that has pushed a roof bow out of shape beneath
- Bubbling filler or lifting paint over an earlier, badly sealed roof repair
Symptoms vary by vehicle and driving conditions. Always confirm diagnosis before replacement.
What to Check When Buying a Used Roof Panel
- Line up a body shop first - this is a welded, bonded panel, not a swap
- Match the configuration exactly: solid, sunroof, panoramic, rails, antenna
- Send the VIN and body style - roof panels do not carry across body styles
- Ask whether the shop wants a full panel or a section - the procedure decides
- Confirm what comes attached: bows, reinforcements, drip rails, roof rails
- Read your paint code off the driver door jamb - it arrives in the donor color
Ask for these details and any available photos before approving a purchase.

How Pricing Is Determined
Pricing for used roof panel depends on several factors:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and engine configuration
- Mileage and overall condition of the donor vehicle
- Supplier location and shipping distance
- Warranty coverage offered
We quote rather than list prices, and on a roof the panel is the smaller half of the story - bodyshop labor and refinish dominate the total, so get the repair plan before you order. Our side of the quote moves on configuration first: solid, sunroof or panoramic, plus rail and antenna provisions. Then how the panel was cut and how much structure comes with it, then condition. Roof panels travel as freight, and a salvage roof lands in the donor color, so paint belongs in the budget from the start.
Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a roof panel just be swapped over?
No. Roof panels are attached by welds, adhesive or both - Subaru's procedure is a total roof panel replacement using welds and adhesive - so this is collision-repair work for a qualified body shop. It is structural too: Federal Standard 216a exists to reduce deaths and injuries from the roof crushing into the occupant compartment in a rollover. Have the shop write the repair plan before you buy a panel.
Does a sunroof roof fit a car that has a solid one?
Treat them as different parts. The aperture and its reinforcement rings are built into the panel, and the federal roof-crush test is run with any moveable roof panel or removable roof structure closed and secured - so it is structure, not an accessory. Panoramic openings, rail provisions and antenna cut-outs split the pool further. Tell us which configuration your VIN was built with.
What else does a roof job involve besides the panel?
More than most people expect, which is why the shop should scope it first. Manufacturer procedures call for specific adhesives and anti-flutter foams: on the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica, adhesive and anti-flutter foam go on the backside of the panel and between the roof bows, and some cannot be reached once the panel is on. Leave it out and you invite corrosion. If a rollover deployed the curtain airbags, roof and pillar trim are on the replacement list too.
Can the shop use just a cut section of a donor roof?
Only where the manufacturer says so. Sectioning is allowed only when the vehicle maker's repair information supports it, and GM warns that sectioning outside the recommended areas may compromise structural integrity - GM also does not sanction clipping, because it cuts across major load-bearing paths. The answer comes from the body repair manual, not from what is available. Ask the shop what the procedure permits, then ask us to quote it.
My roof is covered in hail dents - is a used roof panel the fix or can they be pushed out?
It depends on how many and how deep. Trade guidance puts the tipping point around 300 to 350 dents on a panel, past which the roof becomes a candidate for either conventional repair or replacement, partly because a thin roof skin oil-cans while it is worked and filled. Have the shop count them and weigh the repair hours against a replacement panel first.
Does the windshield have to come out to fit a used roof panel?
Often yes. The published GM procedure for the 2019 GMC Canyon roof panel starts by removing the windshield and the rear windshield, and the flanges of those two openings are ground back to bare steel and then welded to hold the new panel. Both glasses go back in at the end, so glass and fresh urethane belong inside the repair plan rather than as a late surprise.
Can any body shop weld a used roof panel on, or do they need a spot welder?
Ask before you commit to a panel. I-CAR reports that most vehicle makers prefer squeeze-type resistance spot welding for panel attachment because of the high-strength steel involved, and where an OEM requires spot welds, a spot welder becomes necessary equipment for that shop. GM's own roof procedures mix methods, spot welding through adhesive on one model and stitch welding on another.
Is my roof panel steel or aluminum, and does that change the repair?
It changes it completely. The aluminum-cab F-150 is rivet-bonded rather than welded like steel: Ford approved a specific 3M panel-bonding adhesive and a file belt sander for grinding out self-piercing rivets and preparing rivet-bonded repairs, and those high-strength aluminum panels need those methods and tools. Send the VIN with your quote request and check that your shop is set up for it.
How is compatibility verified?
Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.
What if the part does not fit?
Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.
How long does shipping take?
Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
