About This Sunroof Assembly

Before you price a used sunroof assembly, be sure you have a sunroof fault and not a drainage fault, because the two look identical from the driver seat and only one of them needs a part. Every sunroof lets some water past the outer seal by design; a tray under the panel catches it and a drain hole at each corner feeds tubes that run down the A-pillars and rear pillars and out under the car. Block those tubes with pollen, seeds and mildew and the tray overflows into the headliner, down the pillar trim and into the carpet - and a new glass panel will not change that. If the fault really is mechanical, the next question is what the word assembly covers on the unit you are quoted: glass panel only, or the full cassette with frame, motor, drive cables, tracks, sunshade and seals. Single-panel and panoramic roofs are different parts, and panoramic systems add fixed rear glass and a separate shade motor.

Because every sunroof assembly quote is matched to your Ford Escape by VIN, you get a part that fits the first time and keeps your repair on budget.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used sunroof assembly depends on several factors:

What is in the box drives a used sunroof quote. A glass panel alone is one item; a complete cassette with frame, motor, cables, tracks, shade and seals is a whole roof module and is removed from the donor as one piece, which is slower work at the yard. Panoramic systems are larger, carry fixed rear glass and a second shade motor, and crate as oversize freight, so shipping is a real line item on them. Roof type is a build option, not a trim name, so we work from the VIN. Tell us whether you need glass only or the full assembly and we quote in writing. We do not publish prices.

Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

My sunroof leaks - do I need a used sunroof assembly?

Usually not, and this is the cheapest thing we tell anyone. Sunroofs are designed to let a little water past the outer seal into a tray, which drains through a tube at each corner routed down the pillars and out beneath the car. Those tubes clog with pollen, seeds and mildew, the tray overflows, and the water shows up in the headliner and carpet - and left alone it can reach modules under the seats. Have the drains cleared first; if it still leaks with clear drains, then talk to us about parts.

What is included in a used sunroof assembly?

It varies by donor and by how the unit was removed, so ask for the list rather than assuming. A full cassette should arrive with the frame, motor, drive cables, tracks, sunshade and seals, with the glass in place. Some units are sold as glass only, which suits a stone-damaged panel but does nothing for a stripped track or a failed motor. Tell us which failed and we quote the right one.

Is a panoramic roof the same part as a normal sunroof?

No. A panoramic system is a different assembly with a larger sliding panel, usually a fixed rear glass section, and its own sunshade motor alongside the glass motor. Nothing interchanges with a single-panel roof, and even within one model the roof is an option code, so send the VIN and we match the exact system.

Does a replacement sunroof motor need setting up?

Yes - plan for it. Manufacturer procedure calls for the roof motor to be initialized any time the motor has been removed, the glass has been removed or adjusted, or the frame has been out; a fresh motor may only move to the vent position until that is done. The procedure also drives the glass closed with high force with no obstacle detection, so it belongs with the shop doing the fitting.

Can I add a sunroof to a car that was built with a solid roof?

Treat that as body work rather than a parts purchase. The roof over the passenger compartment is covered by the federal roof crush resistance standards, whose stated purpose is reducing deaths and injuries from the roof crushing into the occupant compartment in a rollover, so cutting an opening into a roof never designed for one is structural. The headliner, drain routing and wiring differ too.

My panoramic roof shattered on its own - can I just buy the glass?

Often the panel is what you need, but have the rest checked first. Sunroof glass is typically tempered, so when it fails it breaks into small pieces that drop into the cassette, the tracks and the shade. Consumer Reports counted complaints across at least 208 models and 35 brands, with experts not agreeing on a single cause, so a fresh panel does not remove the risk. Ask for the tracks and shade to be inspected.

Why does replacing a sunroof mean dropping the headliner?

Because the roof structure is behind it, and so are the curtain airbags. Ford's manual puts the side curtain airbags on the roof side-rail sheet metal, behind the headliner above each row of seats, and tells owners not to service, repair or modify those airbags, the pillar trim or the headliner. That is why a sunroof cassette is a booked shop job and not a driveway afternoon.

How do I check the used sunroof glass is the right glazing?

Look at the etched marking in the corner of the panel. Federal glazing rules require every piece to carry the marks from the ANSI/SAE glazing standard, including its AS or item classification, plus the DOT symbol and the manufacturer's code mark that NHTSA assigns. Ask for a close photo of that marking along with the roof option details and we compare it against your VIN.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
