About Used Honda Parts

Honda's Civic, Accord and CR-V are among the most reliable, high-mileage vehicles on the road, so used Honda parts move quickly. Their K-series and Earth Dreams engines and CVT/automatic transmissions are common and well-supported, with excellent fitment data available.

  • Popular models: Civic, Accord, CR-V, Pilot
  • High demand for used Honda engines & CVTs
  • Excellent parts availability and VIN fitment accuracy
Common platforms & generations in salvage

Honda's US salvage volume is concentrated in four nameplates — Civic, Accord, CR-V and Pilot — and fitment turns on the engine code and generation, not the model name. The current interchange map runs by generation: Civic 9th gen (2012–2015), 10th gen (2016–2021) and 11th gen (2022+); Accord 9th gen (2013–2017), 10th gen (2018–2022) and 11th gen (2023+); CR-V 4th gen (2012–2016), 5th gen (2017–2022) and 6th gen (2023+).

Two engine families dominate: the naturally-aspirated K-series fours (the 2.4L K24 in the Accord, CR-V and Civic Si) and the turbocharged engines Honda rolled out with its Earth Dreams direct-injection generation — the 1.5T (L15B7) that reached the Civic and CR-V from 2016–2017, and the 2.0T K20C1 in the Civic Type R (the Si uses the 1.5T). Same displacement is not the same engine — a 2.4 K24 and a 1.5 turbo share nothing — so order by the stamped engine code, verified against the donor.

Known Honda failure patterns to check
  • 1.5L turbo (L15B7) oil dilution: on short cold-climate trips, fuel can wash past the rings into the crankcase, raising oil level and thinning it. Honda extended the warranty to 6 years / unlimited miles on affected 2016–2018 Civic and 2017–2018 CR-V 1.5T cars for the oil-dilution issue, with a software update to warm the engine faster — check eligibility by VIN. Check oil-fill history and confirm the update before buying a used 1.5T long block.
  • Earlier Honda V6 5-speed automatics (early-2000s Accord V6, Odyssey, Acura TL/CL) were recalled for insufficient second-gear lubrication that could chip or break gear teeth — roughly 2003 and early-2004 Accord V6 among others. If you're sourcing an older V6 automatic, confirm the updated/repaired unit.
  • The move to CVTs: most non-turbo Civic/Accord/CR-V models since the mid-2010s use a CVT rather than a geared automatic, so a used transmission has to match the exact type your car left the factory with — a geared auto and a CVT are not interchangeable.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Fitment traps that break interchange
  • Civic Si and Type R don't cross into ordinary Civics: the Si uses the 1.5T, while only the Type R has the 2.0T K20C1, and the Type R is mechanically distinct — source a complete matching Type R donor rather than mixing its parts with a base or Si car.
  • CVT vs geared automatic vs manual: Civic switched from a 5-speed automatic (2012–2013) to a CVT for 2014; Si and Type R are manual-only. Match the transmission type to the exact model year and trim.
  • Turbo vs non-turbo within the same generation: a 5th-gen CR-V base LX runs the 2.4 K24, while EX and up run the 1.5T — the engines, mounts and accessories differ, so order by engine code, not trim year.
  • CR-V and Pilot drivetrain: front-wheel-drive and Real Time AWD versions use different rear driveline and transaxle output, so match FWD/AWD when buying a transmission or engine assembly.
Where to find the engine code & VIN

Honda stamps the engine code and serial number into the block. Read the engine code off your car and any donor, and confirm the 8th VIN digit, before buying — same displacement doesn't mean the same engine, so the stamped code is what settles fitment.

Which Honda parts need coding after install

A used Honda PCM/ECU is not plug-and-play. Honda's immobilizer requires the transponder codes in the keys, the immobilizer unit and the ECU to all match, or the engine won't start — a replacement PCM/ECM must be programmed to the VIN and re-synced to the keys with Honda's HDS/i-HDS tool. Keys and some body/ADAS modules also need programming after replacement, so budget for a shop with Honda software. Most mechanical parts bolt in without coding.

Why Buy Used Honda Parts?

A used part can be a lower-cost alternative to new OEM, especially for an out-of-warranty Honda. The value depends on correct fitment, condition, warranty and return terms, shipping, and the final price.

  • Vehicle details — share the VIN or exact Honda configuration for fitment review.
  • Terms before purchase — review warranty and return terms in writing.
  • Condition information — ask for available photos, mileage, and inspection details.
  • Shipping options — confirm options for the part size and destination.

Used Honda Parts — FAQ

Which years did the Honda 1.5T oil-dilution issue affect?

It centers on the 1.5L turbo (L15B7). Honda extended the warranty to 6 years / unlimited miles on affected 2016–2018 Civic and 2017–2018 CR-V 1.5T cars for the oil-dilution issue, mainly in cold-climate states, and issued a software update to warm the engine faster — check eligibility by VIN. The Accord's 1.5T is a different application and isn't covered. Check oil history and confirm the update before buying a used 1.5T.

Where is the engine code on my Honda?

It's stamped into the engine block, and the code — not the displacement badge — determines fitment. Read it off your car and the donor, and confirm the 8th VIN digit, before ordering.

Does a used Honda ECU or PCM need programming?

Yes. Honda's immobilizer requires the keys, immobilizer unit and ECU codes to match, so a used PCM/ECM must be programmed to your VIN and re-synced to your keys with Honda's HDS tool or the car won't start. Most mechanical parts bolt in without coding; plan a shop visit for the ECU.

Should I worry about VCM before buying a used Honda V6?

On the 3.5-liter V6 with Variable Cylinder Management, yes. A 2013 class action identified roughly 1.6 million 2008-2013 Honda vehicles with that engine as having potential for high oil consumption and misfires tied to VCM operation, and Honda extended warranty coverage on them. Ask for the donor's oil-use and spark-plug history before you commit to a used V6 long block.

Will a used Honda radio or navigation unit ask for a code?

Yes. Honda audio and navigation units are anti-theft locked and demand a code after a swap or a battery disconnect. Honda issues codes through its owner portal using the vehicle's VIN plus the unit's serial number, so get the serial off the donor unit before it ships and confirm a code can be obtained. Send your VIN and your own unit's serial with the quote request.

Do Honda Odyssey, Pilot and Accord V6 parts interchange?

Only partly. All three used the 3.5-liter V6 family, but the transmission behind it differed by model and year: EPA lists the 2013 Pilot with a five-speed automatic, the 2013 Odyssey with both five- and six-speed automatics, and the 2013 Accord V6 with a six-speed. A same-year V6 donor can be the right engine and the wrong gearbox, so match engine and transmission separately.

Will a transmission from a 2014 Honda CR-V fit a 2015?

No. Honda changed the CR-V's transmission part-way through the body generation: EPA lists the 2014 CR-V with a five-speed automatic and the 2015 with a CVT, though the two look alike from the outside. A CVT and a geared automatic are not swappable, so check the model year and the transmission type of any donor before it is quoted, not after it arrives.
