About Used Nissan Frontier Parts

The model year tells a Frontier owner less than on almost any other truck. Nissan built the second-generation D40 Frontier in the US for seventeen model years, 2005 through 2021, and EPA lists the same two engines and three transmissions every year from 2005 to 2019. Then 2020 dropped a completely new engine and gearbox into that same body. Order by engine and transmission, not by the year on the title.

Generations & fitment boundaries

The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.

  • 1998–2004 (First generation (D22)) — EPA lists the 2004 truck as a 2.4L four or a 3.3L V6, with a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. Replaced by the D40 for 2005 — nothing from a later truck answers a D22.
  • 2005–2019 (Second generation (D40)) — Fifteen model years with one US listing: a 2.5L four or the 4.0L VQ40DE V6, with a 5-speed automatic, 5-speed manual or 6-speed manual. A very large donor pool.
  • 2020–2021 (Second generation body, next-generation powertrain) — Still the D40 body, but EPA lists only a 3.8L V6 with a 9-speed automatic — the 2.5L four, the 4.0L V6 and every manual gearbox are gone. The 3.8L VQ38DD was released for the 2020 model year.
  • 2022–present (Third generation (D41)) — The first Frontier designed specifically for North America. EPA lists the same 3.8L V6 and 9-speed as 2020–2021. The ladder frame is a revised version of the outgoing truck's, but body, interior and lighting are new — confirm chassis parts by part number.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart

The good news first. EPA lists the 2005 and the 2019 Frontier in the same configurations — 2.5L four or 4.0L V6, 5-speed automatic, 5-speed or 6-speed manual — so a used engine or gearbox for a D40 can come from a wide span of years. Tell us the engine and transmission and we search across the run, not one model year.

Now the trap. A 2020 or 2021 Frontier looks like a 2019 from outside, but EPA lists it with a 3.8L V6 and a 9-speed automatic and nothing else — the 4.0L V6, the 2.5L four and both manuals are gone. A "2020 Frontier engine" and a "2019 Frontier engine" are two different engines, and a manual gearbox has to come from a 2019 or earlier.

The 4.0L VQ40DE was not Frontier-only: it was also fitted to the 2005–2015 Xterra and the 2005–2012 Pathfinder, and NHTSA campaign 08V690000 covers 2005–2009 Pathfinder, Frontier and Xterra together. Tell us Xterra and body-on-frame Pathfinder donors are acceptable and the search for a 4.0 engine or its ancillaries gets wider. Body panels, beds, lighting and interior stay Frontier-specific.

Known issues that drive used-part demand
  • The one every 2005–2010 owner should know: the court record in the Nissan radiator/transmission cooler class action describes 2005–2010 Pathfinder, Xterra and Frontier vehicles as all using the same radiator and automatic transmission oil cooler, newly designed for the 2005 model year, and states that an internal fatigue crack in the cooler tube can let engine coolant contaminate the transmission fluid. If you are fitting a used automatic to one of these, have a shop assess the radiator at the same time — the same failure can take out the replacement.
  • NHTSA campaign 08V690000 covers 2005–2009 Pathfinder, Frontier and Xterra registered in road-salt states: snow, water and salt can enter the front crash zone sensor housing, rusting it internally and interrupting the signal, which can leave the front airbags undeployed in a crash. Airbags and crash sensors are not a used-parts purchase — check by VIN and use a professional.
  • NHTSA campaign 16V181000 covers a narrow build window of 2016 Frontier V6 trucks whose starter motor wire harness may have been installed in the wrong position, letting the terminal touch the heat shield and short, with a fire risk. Worth knowing if you are buying a used starter for a 2016 — confirm the campaign is closed on your VIN.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Most-requested used Frontier parts

Send the full VIN, the model year, the engine (2.4, 2.5, 3.3, 4.0 or 3.8), the transmission including whether it is a manual, the cab style and 2WD or 4WD. On a 4.0L truck, say whether Xterra and body-on-frame Pathfinder donors are acceptable. Typical requests are engines, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, starters, radiators, beds, tailgates and doors. We quote against your VIN rather than publish stock or prices.

Used Nissan Frontier Parts — FAQ

Will a 2019 Nissan Frontier engine fit a 2020?

No. EPA lists the 2019 Frontier with a 2.5L four or a 4.0L V6 and 2020 with only a 3.8L V6 and a 9-speed automatic. The 2020 keeps the old body but takes the next-generation powertrain, so engines, transmissions and their mounts and controls do not cross that line.

Are all 2005 to 2019 Frontiers basically the same truck?

Mechanically they are very close. EPA lists the same engine and transmission choices — 2.5L four or 4.0L V6, with a 5-speed automatic or a 5- or 6-speed manual — every year from 2005 through 2019, so the D40 donor pool is unusually wide. Trim and equipment still changed, so we confirm by VIN before quoting.

Do Nissan Xterra or Pathfinder parts fit my Frontier?

For the 4.0L V6 they are worth searching. That engine, the VQ40DE, was fitted to the 2005–2019 Frontier, the 2005–2015 Xterra and the 2005–2012 Pathfinder, and NHTSA has covered 2005–2009 Pathfinder, Frontier and Xterra in one campaign. Body panels, beds, lighting and interior remain model-specific.

Which Frontier engine got the 6-speed manual, the 2.5 or the 4.0?

The 6-speed manual sits behind the 4.0L V6 and the 5-speed manual behind the 2.5L four. EPA's 2012 Frontier listing pairs the 2.5L with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic, and the 4.0L with a 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual in either drive. Nissan's 2016 Crew Cab sheet still quotes 6-speed manual final drives for both 4x2 and 4x4 V6 trucks, while the King Cab manual is the 5-speed behind the four-cylinder 4x2.

Will a King Cab bed fit my Nissan Frontier Crew Cab?

Only where the box lengths match. Nissan's 2016 Frontier specifications list the King Cab with a 73.3 inch bed on a 125.9 inch wheelbase, and the Crew Cab with either a 59.5 inch bed on that same wheelbase or the 73.3 inch long bed on a 139.9 inch wheelbase. So the King Cab box is the long one and a standard Crew Cab box is more than a foot shorter. Give the cab style and the bed length.

Is the alternator on a 4-cylinder Frontier the same as the V6 truck's?

No. Nissan's 2016 Frontier specifications rate the four-cylinder truck's alternator at 110 amps and the V6's at 130 amps, and the same sheet lists different front brakes, 11.1 by 0.71 inch rotors on the four-cylinder against 11.7 by 1.1 inch rotors on the V6. On this truck the engine choice changes far more than the engine, so name it even for parts that look generic.

Does a 4x4 Frontier rear differential fit a 2WD Frontier?

Rarely, because the gearing does not line up. Nissan's 2016 Frontier specifications list several final drive ratios inside one model year: 2.937 on the V6 4x2, 3.133 and 3.357 on V6 4x4 trucks, and 4.083 or 4.363 on four-cylinder models. The 4x4 also carries a front differential and a transfer case the 2WD truck does not have. A used axle has to match the ratio your truck was built with.
