About Used Ram Parts

Ram trucks (1500, 2500) have a large, active parts market. HEMI V8s, Pentastar V6s and Cummins diesels — plus heavy-duty transmissions, transfer cases and axles — are commonly sourced used for both repairs and upgrades.

  • Popular models: 1500, 2500
  • HEMI V8 & Cummins diesel engines available used
  • Heavy-duty transmissions, transfer cases & axles
Common platforms & generations in salvage

Ram's used-parts pool is dominated by two trucks: the light-duty 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500. The interchange line that trips buyers on the 1500 is the 2019 model year — Ram launched the new-generation 1500 (DT) for 2019 but kept selling the previous-generation truck alongside it as the "Ram 1500 Classic," so a "2019 Ram 1500" can be one of two different trucks whose sheet metal, interior and some mechanicals do not cross. Confirm Classic vs new body before ordering panels, glass or interior parts.

Engine choice, not the "1500" badge, decides fitment. The 1500 was offered with the 3.6L Pentastar V6, the 5.7L HEMI V8 and the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6; the 2500 runs the 6.4L HEMI gas V8 or the 6.7L Cummins turbo-diesel inline-six. Many gas Rams pair with the ZF-based 8-speed automatic Ram markets as the 845RE, so a used transmission has to match both the engine and the exact 8-speed variant. Order by the engine code, not displacement alone.

Known Ram failure patterns to check
  • The 5.7L HEMI with MDS (Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation) is prone to lifter and camshaft wear on the deactivating cylinders, which shows up as the "HEMI tick," misfires and metal in the oil; a collapsed MDS lifter can score the cam. Listen for a top-end tick and check oil history before buying a used 5.7 long block, and have any tick or misfire diagnosed by a mechanic.
  • The 2011–2013 3.6L Pentastar left (driver-side) cylinder head can wear its valve guides and seats, giving a tick and misfire codes like P0302/P0304/P0306. Chrysler switched to hardened heads in summer 2012 and covered the original left head under campaign X56 (10 years / 150,000 miles); favor a post-2013 3.6 or an updated head, and confirm the misfiring bank first.
  • The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 and the diesel-truck powertrains are emissions-controlled — DEF/SCR after-treatment, EGR and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Used diesel-emissions parts are not legal everywhere (CARB and state programs differ), so route diesel-emissions repairs to a shop that can verify compliance for your state.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Fitment traps that break interchange
  • Ram 1500 Classic (previous generation, sold alongside the new truck from 2019) vs the new-generation 1500 (DT): the two overlap in showrooms, so a model year alone doesn't tell you the body — confirm which one you have before ordering sheet metal, glass or interior.
  • 1500 vs 2500/3500: light-duty and heavy-duty Rams do not share frames, axles, transmissions or most drivetrain — never cross a 1500 part into a 2500 by year alone.
Where to find the engine code & VIN

On a 17-digit Ram VIN the 8th character is the engine code — decode it together with the model year (codes change year to year) to separate a 3.6 Pentastar from a 5.7 HEMI, a 6.4 HEMI or a 6.7 Cummins before you buy an engine or match a transmission. Read the code off your truck and any donor before ordering.

Which Ram parts need coding after install

Ram mechanical parts bolt in without coding, but a used PCM/ECM, the body/TIPM module, cluster or keys must be coded to your VIN with an immobilizer relearn, or the truck won't start or throw faults. Plan on a shop with FCA software for those electronic parts.

Why Buy Used Ram Parts?

A used part can be a lower-cost alternative to new OEM, especially for an out-of-warranty Ram. The value depends on correct fitment, condition, warranty and return terms, shipping, and the final price.

  • Vehicle details — share the VIN or exact Ram configuration for fitment review.
  • Terms before purchase — review warranty and return terms in writing.
  • Condition information — ask for available photos, mileage, and inspection details.
  • Shipping options — confirm options for the part size and destination.

Used Ram Parts — FAQ

Will a used 5.7 HEMI from any year fit my Ram 1500?

Match the engine code and the transmission it mates to, and check for MDS lifter wear. The 5.7 HEMI's cylinder deactivation (MDS) can wear the lifters and cam, so listen for a top-end tick and check oil history, then confirm the code against the 8th VIN digit before ordering.

What is the difference between a 5.9 and a 6.7 Cummins in a Ram 2500?

They are different engines. The 2500 diesel moved from the 5.9L Cummins to the larger 6.7L partway through 2007, and the 6.7 added full DEF/DPF emissions after-treatment. Match the exact engine and its transmission, and remember used diesel-emissions parts must meet your state's rules — they aren't legal everywhere.

Which Ram engines have the Pentastar cylinder-head problem?

Only the 2011–2013 3.6L Pentastar V6, whose left head can wear its valve guides and cause a tick with misfire codes. Chrysler switched to hardened heads mid-2012 and covered the original left head for 10 years / 150,000 miles under campaign X56, so a post-2013 3.6 is the safer used buy.

Are Dodge Ram and Ram 1500 parts the same truck?

Same pickup, two catalog names. Dodge and Ram split into separate brands in 2009, but the paperwork lagged: EPA's fuel-economy database still files the 1500 pickup under Dodge for the 2012 model year while also listing Ram as a make of its own from 2012. Search both spellings, then match by model year, cab and bed, and the 8th VIN digit.

Will Ram ProMaster parts fit my Ram 1500 pickup?

No. The ProMaster is a front-wheel-drive van based on the Fiat Ducato, with unibody construction and a transverse 3.6 Pentastar driving a 62TE automatic transaxle; the diesel used a separate M40 gearbox. The 1500 pickup is sold only as a 2WD or 4WD truck, so mounts, transaxle, subframe and driveline parts do not cross between them.

Does my 2019 Ram 1500 have eTorque, and does it change parts?

eTorque replaces the alternator with a belt-driven motor generator fed by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery, so an eTorque truck differs at the front of the engine and through the charging system. Ram applied it to both the 3.6 Pentastar and the 5.7 HEMI, and sold the 5.7 without it too. Note which you have on your quote request, and leave 48-volt work to a shop.

Do RamBox bedsides fit a standard Ram pickup bed?

No. RamBox builds two weatherproof, lockable, drainable, lighted bins into the bedsides, running the length of the bed and as wide as the wheel well, so those bedsides, lids and inner panels are specific to that bed. Ram offered it on set combinations only, including 6-foot-4 beds on the 1500 Regular and Quad Cab and single-rear-wheel 2500 and 3500 Crew and Mega Cab.
