About Used Toyota 4Runner Parts

Used Toyota 4Runner parts are unusual: the model year barely narrows anything down. The fifth generation ran from the 2010 model year through 2024 in the US - fifteen model years on one body and, for 4WD trucks, one engine. What decides fitment is which side of the 2010 and 2025 generation walls you sit on, and for body and lighting parts, which side of the 2014 facelift.

Generations & fitment boundaries

The generation and platform decide whether a used part interchanges. Match yours before you request a quote.

  • 2003-2009 (fourth generation (N210)) — Based on the J120 Land Cruiser Prado, related to the Lexus GX 470, and the only US 4Runner generation with a V8. A 2006 refresh brought new bumpers, a reworked grille, projector-beam headlamps and LED tail lamps, and moved the turn signals into the headlamp assembly.
  • 2010-2024 (fifth generation (N280)) — Built on the J150 Prado / Lexus GX platform. Fifteen model years, one body, one V6. The 2014 facelift changed the front and rear fascia, headlamps and tail lamps with no driveline changes - it splits body and lighting parts, not engines.
  • 2025-present (sixth generation (N500)) — A clean break: the GA-F platform shared with the current Tacoma, a 2.4L turbocharged four in place of the V6, an 8-speed automatic and an available hybrid. Nothing from a 2024 truck answers a 2025 one.
Engines & transmissions — how to tell them apart

Fourth-generation trucks came two ways in the US. EPA lists the 2003 and 2004 4Runner with a 4.0L V6 on a 4-speed automatic or a 4.7L V8 on a 5-speed automatic; from 2005 the V6 moves to the 5-speed too, so a 2004 V6 automatic and a 2005 V6 automatic are not the same unit. The V6 is the 1GR-FE, the V8 the 2UZ-FE, which gained VVT-i for 2005.

The fifth generation has the opposite problem - it is almost too consistent. Every 4WD 4Runner from 2010 through 2024 is listed by EPA with the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 and a 5-speed automatic. A 2.7L four with a 4-speed automatic was offered on the two-wheel-drive truck, and EPA lists it for 2010 and 2011 only; from 2012 the V6 is the whole lineup. The 4.7L V8 was not carried over.

That consistency is exactly why VIN matching still matters. A long-running engine family does not mean every accessory, harness, sensor and emissions part is identical across fifteen years, and it says nothing about panels, lamps, trim, or 2WD versus part-time versus full-time 4WD hardware.

Known issues that drive used-part demand
  • Fuel pumps on late fifth-generation trucks are a documented campaign, not a rumour. NHTSA 20V682000 covers 2018-2019 4Runners among many Toyota and Lexus models where the low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank can fail and stall the engine while driving. Do not source a used in-tank pump from a donor in that range, and leave fuel-system work to a qualified shop.
  • Airbag hardware is recall territory in both generations. NHTSA 16V065000 covers 2004-2006 4Runners whose airbag control module may be improperly programmed, letting the side curtain-shield bags deploy without a crash; NHTSA 19V741000 covers 2010-2016 4Runners for a passenger frontal airbag inflator. Restraints are not a used-parts purchase - check open campaigns by VIN and leave that system to a professional.
  • For body and lighting on a fifth-generation truck, treat 2014 as the wall. The facelift revised the front and rear fascia and fitted projector headlamps and clear-lensed LED tail lamps, so a 2010-2013 lamp or bumper cover is a different part from a 2014-2024 one even though the engine underneath never changed. Lighting shifted again for 2022, when LED low and high beams became standard across all trims.

Safety- and emissions-related parts should be diagnosed and installed by a licensed mechanic.

Most-requested used 4Runner parts

Engines, transmissions, transfer cases, rear axles, alternators, starters, radiators, headlamp and tail lamp assemblies, tailgates and collision panels are the usual 4Runner requests. Send the 17-digit VIN, the model year, the engine (4.0 V6, 4.7 V8 or 2.7 four) and whether the truck is 2WD, part-time 4WD or full-time 4WD; for exterior parts, say whether it is a pre-2014 or 2014-and-later fifth-generation truck. We quote against verified donors rather than publishing stock or prices.

Used Toyota 4Runner Parts — FAQ

Will a 2011 4Runner part fit a 2020 4Runner?

It depends on the part. Both are fifth-generation trucks and both use the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 with a 5-speed automatic, so much of the driveline shares a long donor range. Body and lighting are different: the 2014 facelift changed the front and rear fascia, headlamps and tail lamps, so exterior parts split at 2014. Send the VIN and the part and we confirm which side of the line you are on.

Which Toyota 4Runner years came with a V8?

Only the fourth generation, US model years 2003 through 2009, with the 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 - EPA lists it alongside the 4.0L V6 through 2009. It was not carried over when the fifth generation arrived for 2010, so a used 4Runner V8 or its automatic has to come from a 2003-2009 truck.

Will a 2024 4Runner engine fit a 2025?

No. 2025 starts the sixth generation on the GA-F platform shared with the current Tacoma, and the 4.0L V6 with its 5-speed automatic was replaced by a 2.4L turbocharged four with an 8-speed automatic, plus an available hybrid. Treat 2024 and 2025 as two different vehicles when ordering. On the hybrid, high-voltage battery and inverter work routes to a technician qualified on hybrid systems.

Does my 4Runner have part-time or full-time 4WD, and does that change the transfer case?

It follows the grade, and the split moves by model year. Toyota's 2023 4Runner tables list part-time 4WD with Active Traction Control on SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro, and full-time 4WD on the Limited alone, with a Torsen limited-slip center differential with locking feature. The 2021 tables add full-time 4WD on the Nightshade Special Edition, so send the model year and grade with the VIN.

Which 4Runner grades have KDSS, and will suspension parts from one without it fit?

Check your own model year, because the grade list moves. Toyota's 2023 tables offer KDSS on TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium and fit X-REAS to TRD Sport and Limited; the 2021 tables offer KDSS on three grades and X-REAS on Limited and Nightshade Edition. KDSS automatically decouples the sway bars, so that truck carries hardware a plain 4Runner does not. Match sway bars and shocks to the year and grade.

Did my 4Runner come with the third-row seat, and what changes if it did?

The third row was optional and grade-limited, and which grades got it moved by year. Toyota's 2023 tables show a 50/50 split fold-flat third row with a sliding second row as optional on SR5, SR5 Premium and Limited, seating 5 or 7, with the TRD grades five-seat only; the 2021 tables add Nightshade Edition. A seven-seat truck uses a different second-row seat, so interior parts have to match the seat count.

How do I know if my 4Runner has a locking rear differential before ordering an axle?

It is set by grade, and the grade list changes by year. Toyota's 2023 tables show an electronically controlled locking rear differential as standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium and TRD Pro and absent from SR5, TRD Sport and Limited; the 2021 tables show it on four grades. A locking axle carries an actuator and wiring an open one does not, so send the year and grade with the VIN.
