About This Fuel Pump

Ask for a used fuel pump and what you usually need is the whole in-tank module. On modern vehicles the pump sits submerged in the tank on a hanger assembly - Aeromotive states flatly that no modern car uses an external in-line pump - and that hanger normally carries more than the motor: the fuel-level sending unit that drives your gas gauge, an inlet strainer, and on a returnless system the fuel-pressure regulator, which sits in the tank instead of on the fuel rail. Say which you want, because a complete module and a bare pump are two different quotes. Fitment then turns on the fuel system rather than the model name: returnless layouts generally run at a higher pressure than older return-type ones, and the connector and hanger are VIN-specific. If the engine is direct injection, the in-tank unit is only a low-pressure lift pump feeding a separate engine-mounted high-pressure pump. Fuel work is pressurised and flammable - leave diagnosis and fitting to a professional.

Because every fuel pump quote is matched to your Lexus by VIN, you get a part that fits the first time and keeps your repair on budget.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used fuel pump depends on several factors:

What moves a fuel-pump quote is scope. A complete module with the hanger, sending unit, strainer and in-tank regulator is a different item from a bare pump motor, so say which one your shop asked for. After that it is system type and engine: return versus returnless changes where the regulator sits and the pressure the system runs at, and a direct-injection car has both an in-tank lift pump and an engine-mounted high-pressure pump. Connector and pin count vary within a single model year, so the VIN does more for accuracy than the badge. We do not publish prices - send the vehicle and the part and ask for a written quote.

Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the complete module or just the pump motor?

Ask your installer, then tell us. The module is the whole in-tank assembly - pump, hanger, inlet strainer, the fuel-level sending unit that runs your gauge, and on a returnless system the fuel-pressure regulator, which sits in the tank rather than on the rail. Fitting only the motor means reusing the original hanger, seals and sending unit, which may be as old as the car. Both are quotable; they are simply not the same part.

Why did my last fuel pump fail so soon after it was fitted?

Usually the tank. Delphi tells technicians it is critical to clean the fuel tank before replacing a pump or module, because contaminants left in a dirty tank can kill the new pump. Running the tank near empty does its own damage: fuel is what cools and lubricates the pump, and Aeromotive notes the wear from losing it may not surface for months. Fix the cause or you buy the part twice.

Does a used pump have to match my exact fuel system?

Yes. Returnless systems put the pressure regulator inside the tank and delete the return line, and they generally run at higher pressure than the older return-type layout, so a hanger from the wrong system will not control pressure correctly even if it drops in. Connector and pin count have to match too. Send the VIN.

My engine is direct injection - which pump failed?

There are two, so this matters. A direct-injection engine still uses a low-pressure electric lift pump in the tank, and that pump feeds a separate mechanical high-pressure pump driven off the engine. They are separate parts. Have the fault confirmed on a pressure test, then tell us which side read low.

How do I know I need a fuel pump and not a relay, fuse or wiring fault?

You do not, until the circuit is checked. A dead-pump complaint can be the pump, its relay, its fuse or a fault in the pump wiring, and on some vehicles the circuit runs through an oil-pressure switch or an inertia safety switch. Low supply voltage or a high-resistance ground also makes a good pump act weak. Get the feed and the pressure checked before ordering.

Will my fuel gauge read correctly with a used fuel pump module?

Only if the level sender on the hanger behaves the way your gauge expects. Delphi notes some senders are attached to the pump assembly and that they work differently by manufacturer: a Ford unit sits furthest from ground on a full tank while a GM unit of the same year sits closest, so the resistance runs the opposite way. A hanger off another application can drop in and still read wrong.

My truck has two fuel pumps in the tank - which one do I order?

Say which sump it came out of. A saddle-shaped tank is bridged in the middle so driveline or exhaust parts pass through, leaving two sumps, and GM's patent for the layout puts a primary pump assembly in one sump and a second pump assembly in the other, with jet pumps moving fuel between them. Those are separate parts, so have the shop name the side.

My car may be flex-fuel - does the fuel pump have to come from an E85 car?

Treat it as a different part until the VIN says otherwise. The Department of Energy's fuel economy site says flex-fuel vehicles run blends up to 85 percent ethanol and, apart from a few engine and fuel system modifications, are identical to gasoline-only models - and that you may be driving one without knowing. Send the VIN with your quote request.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
