About This Fuel Tank

A used fuel tank is rarely just a tank. Patent literature on modern multi-layer tanks lists the filler spout, the fuel pump, a vent valve, a weld cap and the fuel-level sensor as parts fitted in or on the shell, so the first question on any tank quote is what transfers: your pump module and sender, or the donor's. Material is the next fork. Most current tanks are blow-moulded plastic built from at least two structural layers of high-density polyethylene with an EVOH vapour-barrier layer between them, because the barrier is what stops fuel vapour passing through the wall. Steel tanks are still common on older trucks and fail from the inside out: water vapour collects above the fuel in a part-full tank and rusts the metal from within, so a tank that looks sound underneath can still be scrap. Emissions hardware is the third trap: the tank's vent and rollover fittings changed as onboard refuelling vapour recovery was phased in. Dropping and fitting a tank is pressurised, flammable work for a shop.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used fuel tank depends on several factors:

Three things move a fuel-tank quote. First, completeness: a bare shell and a tank still carrying the pump module, sender, vent and rollover valves and straps are different items, so say what you intend to reuse. Second, material and capacity, since plastic and steel tanks of the same nominal size are not interchangeable in shape, mounting or vent layout. Third, internal condition - the inside of a used tank matters more than the outside, and it is what photographs usually miss. We do not publish prices; send the VIN and ask for a written quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a used fuel tank come with the pump and sending unit?

Not automatically, so ask. Modern tanks are built with the filler spout, fuel pump, vent valve, weld cap and fuel-level sensor fitted in or on the shell, which means a donor tank can arrive with all of that, some of it, or an empty aperture. Tell us whether you are transferring your own module and sender or want them included - it changes the quote and the labour your shop books.

Plastic or steel - can I fit whichever I find?

Use the type your vehicle was designed for. A modern plastic tank is a multi-layer moulding, high-density polyethylene either side of an EVOH vapour barrier; a steel tank of the same capacity has different mounting, strap and vent geometry. Steel also has an ageing problem plastic does not: vapour in the air space above the fuel rusts a metal tank from the inside out.

Why does the VIN matter so much on a fuel tank?

Because of the vapour-recovery plumbing. Onboard refuelling vapour recovery was mandated in the US on passenger cars phasing in over the 1998-2000 model years and on light trucks up to 10,000 lb GVWR over 2001-2006, and the tank carries the hardware: a vent and rollover valve that doubles as a fill limiter, plus an anti-spitback valve in the fillneck. Tanks either side of a change carry different fittings.

My fuel pump failed - do I need a new tank as well?

Possibly, and it is worth asking while the pump is out. Delphi tells technicians it is critical to clean the fuel tank before fitting a pump or module, because contaminants left in a dirty tank can destroy the replacement. If the inside is scaled with rust or full of sediment, cleaning may not get you there and the tank is the real repair. Have your shop inspect and photograph the interior before you decide.

I have a flex-fuel truck - can I use a fuel tank from the gas-only version?

Do not assume the two are interchangeable. The Alternative Fuels Data Center says a flex-fuel vehicle needs special ethanol-compatible components to cope with ethanol's chemical properties, naming modifications to the fuel pump and fuel injection system, and says the engine control module is calibrated for ethanol's higher oxygen content. So a donor tank that arrives with a pump module has to be the flex-fuel one.

Can my shop weld or patch my rusted fuel tank instead of replacing it?

Treat a holed tank as a replacement, not a repair. OSHA's hot-work rule states that no welding, cutting or other hot work shall be performed on used drums, barrels, tanks or other containers until they have been cleaned so thoroughly as to make absolutely certain no flammable materials are present. Few shops will take that on, and a patch does nothing about a steel tank rusting from the inside.

Does my pickup's bed length change which fuel tank fits?

Often yes, so give the configuration and not just the year. Spectra Premium's catalogue splits parts for one 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 by body: one fuel module listed with short bed and another with long bed, and tank straps called out separately for a 97.9 inch bed with a 35 gallon tank and a 75.9 inch bed with a 34 gallon tank. Bed length and tank capacity both move the part.

My fuel gauge is stuck - do I need a whole new fuel tank?

Probably not. The level sender sits inside the tank, and Delphi notes that some sending units attach to the fuel pump assembly while others are stand-alone, so the part you need is normally a sender or module rather than the shell. Delphi ties gauge faults to a float separated from its arm, a faulty resistor or an arm sticking at one level, and says to test first - the fix can be a cluster fuse.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
