About This Hybrid Inverter

A used hybrid inverter is the box that turns high-voltage DC from the traction pack into the AC a drive motor runs on, and turns it back again when the car regenerates. In manufacturer language it is the power electronics controller, managing energy flow out of the traction battery and setting the motor's speed and torque. Two things shape the quote. First, the same assembly often houses the DC-DC converter that charges the 12 V battery, so an inverter-side fault can present as a 12 V battery that keeps dying rather than as a hybrid fault. Second, converting that much power makes a lot of heat, so these units are liquid cooled - typically on their own circuit driven by an electric pump. The system runs at 400 to 1,000 volts, so price the part and let an HV-trained shop diagnose and fit it.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used hybrid inverter depends on several factors:

What moves a used hybrid inverter quote is mostly what is inside the box you are quoting. An inverter on its own, an inverter with the DC-DC converter built in, and a combined power-electronics unit are three different parts, so tell us which your vehicle uses. After that: how tightly the part number and software revision must match, and whether a setup step is needed at the vehicle. Budget for the cooling circuit too - if the pump or coolant that killed the original is still in the car, the replacement inherits it. Send the VIN and the stored codes. We do not display prices. Request a quote and review the written terms first.

Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a bad inverter kill my 12 V battery?

Because on most hybrids and EVs there is no alternator. The 12 V battery is recharged by a DC-DC converter that steps voltage down from the traction pack, and on many vehicles that converter lives inside the inverter assembly. If it stops charging properly, you get the classic pattern: a new 12 V battery that is flat again within weeks, plus odd warning lights as system voltage sags. Worth diagnosing before anyone buys a third battery.

Does a hybrid inverter have its own cooling system?

On many vehicles yes - a liquid loop of its own with its own electric pump, separate from the engine's. It exists because converting DC to AC at this power throws off a lot of heat. It also explains a lot of inverter failures: a seized pump, a blocked line or an air pocket lets the unit overheat and sets a cooling-performance code. Have the shop deal with the pump and coolant at the same time.

Does a used hybrid inverter need programming?

Ask before you order - it depends on the platform. Manufacturer service information does publish programming-and-setup routines for drive motor power inverter modules, in some cases with an immobiliser learn step, while listing other devices as needing no setup at all. Your fitting shop can tell you which applies to your VIN - worth knowing before the part is on the bench.

Can any repair shop fit a used inverter?

No. This part sits on a system that typically runs at 400 to 1,000 volts, behind the distinctively marked orange high-voltage cabling, and electrical safety rules limit work on circuits that have not been de-energised to qualified people with the right training and equipment. We publish no procedure for it. Before you buy, line up a shop with HV-trained technicians.

My 2010-2014 Prius has a hybrid warning - is the inverter covered by a campaign?

Check before buying. NHTSA recall 14V-053 covers 2010-2014 Prius because transistors in the Intelligent Power Module inside the inverter can be damaged by high operating temperatures; the free remedy is a software update to the motor/generator control and hybrid control ECUs. Toyota separately extended IPM coverage to 15 years with no mileage limit from first use, flagged by codes P0A94, P324E, P3004 or P0A1A. A dealer can run the VIN.

Can I keep driving the car while I wait for a replacement hybrid inverter?

Treat it as a tow, not a drive. NHTSA's records for inverter power-module faults describe warning lamps with reduced power allowing only a short distance, and state the hybrid system can shut down completely and stall the vehicle while it is being driven, which raises crash risk. Hyundai's ICCU campaign is recorded the same way, as a loss of drive power. Park it and have it moved on a truck.

On an Ioniq 5, is the box that stopped charging the 12-volt battery the inverter?

Probably not - on those cars it is the Integrated Charging Control Unit. NHTSA recall 24V-868, which expanded 24V-204, covers 2022-2024 Ioniq 5, 2023-2025 Ioniq 6 and the Genesis GV60, Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80 because the ICCU may be damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can cause loss of drive power. Dealers replace the ICCU and its fuse and update its software free of charge.

Can just the power module inside the inverter be replaced instead of the whole unit?

On some platforms yes, so ask before pricing a complete assembly. Toyota's program for the 2010-2014 Prius points dealers to the repair-manual procedure for replacement of the Intelligent Power Module, and covers failure of the IPM plus other internal inverter components damaged by it. In other words the repair your shop quotes may be the module inside the box rather than the box itself. Settle which one you need first.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
