About This Side Mirror

A used side mirror is bought on feature content, not model name. The same car in the same year can leave the factory with anything from a plain powered mirror to one carrying heated glass, power folding, memory, a signal repeater, a blind-spot lamp, a puddle lamp and a camera - different parts, different wiring. Honda publishes a clean example: on the 2023 CR-V power mirrors are standard, heated glass starts at EX, turn indicators are on every trim, and the housings are body-colored on some trims and gloss black on others. Both the electrical build and the finish move by trim inside one model year. Cameras matter most: surround-view systems put a camera under each mirror and Honda LaneWatch puts one below the passenger mirror, so calibration becomes shop work. The blind-spot indicator is the opposite case - only a lamp, with the radar elsewhere.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used side mirror depends on several factors:

Feature content decides a side mirror quote. A plain powered mirror is a simple part; add heated glass, power folding, memory, a signal repeater, a blind-spot lamp, a puddle lamp or a camera and each makes it a different, scarcer item. Side matters, and so does housing finish, because one model year can be body-color on one trim and gloss black on another. A camera adds calibration at the installer. Mirrors ship easily, so freight is rarely the issue - matching the build is. Ask for a written quote listing the features included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fit a plain mirror if mine has a blind-spot indicator?

Not if you want the warning back. On most vehicles the blind-spot radars sit behind the rear bumper cover or in the quarter panel, and the lamp in the mirror is only the output showing what those sensors found. A plain mirror has no lamp and no wiring for one, so the system has nowhere to display. Match the mirror to the equipment your car was built with.

Does replacing the mirror mean the blind-spot system needs recalibrating?

Usually not, and this is widely misunderstood. Industry guidance is explicit: because the radar sensors are in the rear of the vehicle rather than the mirrors, blind-spot detection does not normally need calibrating just because a mirror was removed or replaced. It changes if a camera is in the mirror - a different system, where calibration is normally required after the camera is replaced. Have your installer follow the VIN procedure.

What is the camera under my mirror for?

One of two things. On a surround-view system, a camera under each mirror is stitched with cameras in the front bumper and tailgate to build the bird's-eye picture. Honda LaneWatch instead uses one camera below the passenger mirror, showing that lane on the dash screen when you signal right - about 80 degrees against roughly 18 to 22 for the mirror alone. Either way, it is not the same part as a plain mirror.

Will a used mirror match my paint?

Only if the donor shared your color and trim finish, which is uncommon. Used mirrors arrive in the donor vehicle's color, and caps are a case where trim changes the finish outright - body-color on some versions, gloss black on others. Where the cap is painted, expect the same blendable-match approach a shop uses on any panel. Take your code from the Color ID label; the VIN does not contain it.

Can I use a passenger-side convex mirror glass on the driver's side?

No. The federal mirror standard requires the driver's outside mirror to be of unit magnification, while the passenger side may be unit magnification or convex - and a convex one must be permanently marked 'Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear' in letters 4.8 to 6.4 mm high. Driver and passenger mirrors are different parts for that reason, not just mirrored shapes.

How do I tell if my side mirrors are heated before I order a used one?

Use your rear-window defroster. Hyundai's manual states that the outside rear-view mirror defrosters operate when you turn on the rear window defroster, and Kia's says that where the mirror defrosters are fitted they run at the same time as the rear window defroster. If that button clears the mirror glass, yours are heated. Note it on your quote request, because an unheated mirror leaves the circuit dead.

My power-folding mirror was pushed by hand and now sits crooked - is it ruined?

That is a common way to ruin one, on your car and on the donor. Kia's manual says not to fold an outside rear-view mirror by hand because it can damage the motor, and Mazda warns that setting a power-folding mirror to the on-road position by hand is dangerous because it will not lock properly. Where the drive is stripped, the fix is a mirror, not an adjustment.

Do I have to replace the passenger side mirror, or can I just leave it off?

How the vehicle was built decides. Under the federal standard a passenger car needs an outside mirror on the passenger side only where the inside mirror cannot meet the field-of-view requirement, but a truck or multipurpose passenger vehicle at or under 4,536 kg must carry outside mirrors on both sides, each with at least 126 square cm of reflective surface. State inspection rules sit on top of that.
