About This Starter Motor

The starter motor spins the engine fast enough to fire it up. A tested used or reman starter replaces one that clicks, drags, grinds or won't engage β€” but before you buy, rule out the cheaper things that mimic a bad starter: a weak or dead battery, corroded battery or ground terminals, and a failing starter relay or ignition switch all cause the same won't-crank or single click. So can an immobilizer or security fault, which disables starting even with a perfect starter. A quick battery and voltage-drop test at a shop confirms it's the starter before you replace it. Match your exact engine and transmission, the drive type, and the tooth count and the unit drops in and engages cleanly.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used starter motor depends on several factors:

What you pay depends on whether it's a common direct-drive unit or a gear-reduction starter, how specific the mounting and connector are, and whether you go used-tested or reman. We quote after confirming fitment β€” no price is charged here, and you review the written terms and warranty before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it the starter or the battery?

Rapid clicking, dim dash lights, or cranking that speeds up after a jump usually mean a weak battery or bad connection, not the starter. One firm click with the lights staying bright points more at the starter or its wiring. A battery load test and a voltage-drop test at a shop settle it in minutes before you spend on a starter.

Why does my car click once and then nothing?

A single click is typically the solenoid pulling in while the motor fails to turn β€” a worn starter, or voltage lost through corroded battery terminals or a bad ground. Clean and tighten the connections first; if a good battery and clean cables still give one click, the starter is the likely cause.

Does a used starter come with the solenoid?

On modern starters the solenoid is integrated on top of the unit, so a used starter normally includes it. Older designs sometimes mount the solenoid separately. Confirm it's included and tested, since the solenoid is a common failure point.

Could a security light mean the starter is fine?

Yes. An immobilizer or anti-theft fault can disable starting even with a healthy starter and battery β€” often shown by a flashing security/key light. If that light is on, have the security system diagnosed before replacing the starter.

My Honda Pilot will not auto-restart after idle stop - is that the starter?

It can be, but check the coverage before you buy. Honda's bulletin 23-009 for 2016-21 Pilot, 2019-21 Passport and 2020-21 Ridgeline with the 9-speed and Idle Stop describes a failure to restart caused by excessive cylinder pressure or low cranking torque, with the fix being a new starter, starter relays and a valve adjustment. Honda extended coverage for that work to 10 years from purchase with no mileage limit, so have a dealer run the VIN.

Does a start-stop engine need a different starter than a normal one?

Yes - treat them as separate parts. Bosch says its start/stop starters are built to deliver up to 3.5 times the cycles of a conventional unit, with reinforced bearings, an enhanced planetary gear unit, a heavy-duty meshing mechanism and an optimized commutator, because the engine restarts every time you come to a halt. A conventional starter is geared and wound for a few starts a day, not dozens.

Will a used starter fix the grinding, or is my flywheel ring gear chewed up?

Have the ring gear looked at before anything is fitted. Hella's starter damage-assessment guidance says the engine's ring gear should be checked for damage before a replacement starter goes in, and replaced if necessary. The pinion meets the same few teeth over and over, so a starter that ground its way to failure usually leaves damaged teeth behind - and those teeth will chew up the next starter just as fast.

Can a rattle from the front of a GM crossover really be the starter?

It can. GM bulletin 21-NA-279 covers a rattle from the engine and transmission area on certain Blazer, Acadia, Envision, CT4, CT5, XT4, XT5 and XT6 models from 2019 on, easiest to reproduce at low speed on right-hand turns. The cause given is the starter drive gear sliding down the motor shaft and touching the ring gear; the check is to hold the removed starter level, tip the nose down and see whether the gear slides.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
