About This Subframe
A subframe is the bolt-in structure carrying the engine, the suspension arms and often the steering gear, so with a used one there are two questions: has it rusted, and has it been hit. Neither is cosmetic. When a subframe corrodes at a mounting point, what fails is a suspension arm or a steering shaft. Honda is recalling 2016-2022 Pilot, 2017-2023 Ridgeline, 2019-2023 Passport and 2014-2020 Acura MDX vehicles sold in 22 salt-belt states and DC because the rear subframe can corrode at the suspension mounting points - which NHTSA records as leading to rear suspension component failure and a loss of handling and control. The 1999-2003 Ford Windstar recall reads the same from the front: separation of both front subframe rear body mounts could separate the steering intermediate shaft. So the donor matters more here than on almost any used part: where the car spent its winters belongs in the description alongside the year.

Before you order, it helps to read:
Common Signs Your Subframe May Need Replacing
- Rust scaling, bubbling or actual holes around the suspension-arm and body-mount points
- A clunk or shift from one end of the car that changes with load or steering input
- An alignment that reads outside the adjustment range, or will not stay set
- Steering that wanders or feels vague after a collision or a curb strike
- Tire wear that turns uneven again within weeks of a fresh alignment
- Visible collision damage - a kinked rail, torn metal, an oval mounting hole
Symptoms vary by vehicle and driving conditions. Always confirm diagnosis before replacement.
What to Check When Buying a Used Subframe
- Send the VIN and say front or rear, plus the drivetrain, before anything
- Ask where the donor was registered - a salt-belt car is a different risk
- Check your VIN against open recalls first - a corrosion recall may cover the repair
- Have the mounting points inspected specifically, not the middle of the casting
- Agree in writing what comes attached: bushings, mounts, arms, steering gear
- Book a four-wheel alignment into the job, because the structure moved
Ask for these details and any available photos before approving a purchase.
What Happens After You Request a Quote

How Pricing Is Determined
Pricing for used subframe depends on several factors:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and engine configuration
- Mileage and overall condition of the donor vehicle
- Supplier location and shipping distance
- Warranty coverage offered
We quote rather than publish prices, and a subframe quote turns on three things. Front or rear, and the drivetrain it was built for - these are not one part with variants. How much comes attached: a bare shell and one still carrying bushings, mounts, arms and a steering rack are different orders. And condition, which on a structural part is the whole grade, not a footnote. These are heavy items, so freight is a real line. Budget the alignment too. Send the VIN and we quote in writing.
Confirm the final price and fitment basis before approving a purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a rusted subframe dangerous, or just ugly?
It is a safety item. Federal recall records describe subframe corrosion at the suspension mounting points as leading to rear suspension component failure and a loss of handling and control; on another recalled model, separation of both front subframe rear body mounts could separate the steering intermediate shaft. Have it inspected on a lift, and do it now if handling or noise has changed.
Can a bent or rusted subframe be repaired instead of replaced?
That is for the shop and the manufacturer procedure, not a parts supplier. I-CAR frames it as questions: is the repaired area under continual stress, are safety-related parts mounted to it, is there access to restore corrosion protection, and are there manufacturer warnings against the repair - a part should not be repaired where warnings exist. Published guidance for damaged suspension mounting locations is limited, so many shops replace instead.
Do I really need an alignment afterwards?
Yes. I-CAR lists movement of the structure affecting steering or suspension mounting locations, and replacement of any steering or suspension part, among the conditions that change alignment angles. An alignment check is expected once repairs are done, and a four-wheel alignment follows if it shows misalignment. A subframe swap ticks both at once.
How do I judge a used subframe I cannot see?
Ask for what predicts condition, not reassurance: which state the donor was registered in, close photographs of the mount faces and seams rather than one wide shot, whether it has been repainted or resealed, and whether the mounting holes are still round. Ask before you commit, and read the written terms with the quote.
Do the subframe bolts have to be replaced, or can the old ones go back in?
That follows the manufacturer procedure, so ask the shop before you buy. Where torque-to-yield bolts are specified, I-CAR says they are one-time-use fasteners designed to stretch during torquing, that they cannot and should not be reused, that they will not have the same clamping strength a second time, and that they may break or work loose. Put the fasteners in the plan.
After a subframe swap, does anything electronic need calibrating?
Often, on top of the alignment. I-CAR lists steering angle sensor calibration as something that may be needed after structural repairs or a wheel alignment, and that sensor controls systems such as lane keep assist, blind spot detection and adaptive lighting. Whether forward cameras and radar also need calibrating after an alignment varies by maker. Ask the shop what yours requires.
My car was hit - will a straight used subframe on its own fix the alignment?
Only if the body it bolts to is still in position. The subframe locates suspension, so when the rails or mounting points move in an impact, a perfect member is simply pulled out of place and the alignment will not hold. In one I-CAR case the front rails were 20 mm out of specification with no obvious panel gaps, found only on a three-dimensional measuring system. Measure before you buy.
Does a used subframe need anything done to it before it goes on the car?
Where its coating has gone, yes. From the factory, enclosed structural parts carry zinc and then E-coat, which I-CAR calls the best corrosion protection material that will ever be applied to a vehicle surface. Restoring the inside now means anti-corrosion compound misted in through access holes, not paint on the outside. Ask what was done inside a blasted and repainted member.
How is compatibility verified?
Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.
What if the part does not fit?
Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.
How long does shipping take?
Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
