About This Tailgate
A used tailgate is really two different purchases, and the fork is manual versus power. A plain pickup tailgate or a manually lifted gate is a panel with hinges, a latch, a handle and cables. A power liftgate adds gas or electric struts, a drive motor, a latch that pulls itself shut and its own control module that talks to the body control module - and because most of the tests and the position calibration need a scan tool that can address individual modules, that is a workshop fit. On an SUV gate, list the hardware separately: glass, wiper motor, defroster grid, third brake light, spoiler, handle, latch and the reversing camera, which every light vehicle built from May 1, 2018 has under the federal rear-visibility rule. Some transfers from your old gate, some must come with the donor one - agree both lists before anything ships. And a salvage gate arrives in the donor truck's color.

Before you order, it helps to read:
Common Signs Your Tailgate May Need Replacing
- Dents, a creased skin or a gate that no longer sits flush when shut
- Rust bubbling along the bottom seam or around the handle recess
- A latch that will not hold, or an ajar warning that stays lit
- A power gate that opens part way and reverses, or stops mid travel
- A gate that drops or will not stay up because the struts are spent
- A dead wiper, defroster or reversing camera after a rear impact
Symptoms vary by vehicle and driving conditions. Always confirm diagnosis before replacement.
What to Check When Buying a Used Tailgate
- Say manual or power first - it changes the part, not just the price
- Ask what is included: glass, wiper motor, latch, handle, struts, motor
- Confirm whether the reversing camera comes with it or transfers
- For a pickup, give the model generation and bed style, not just the year
- Read your paint code off the driver door jamb label before discussing finish
- Book a shop that can calibrate a power gate after fitting
Ask for these details and any available photos before approving a purchase.

How Pricing Is Determined
Pricing for used tailgate depends on several factors:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and engine configuration
- Mileage and overall condition of the donor vehicle
- Supplier location and shipping distance
- Warranty coverage offered
Manual or power is the biggest single lever on a used tailgate quote. A bare pickup gate is one panel; a power liftgate is a panel plus struts, a motor, a latch assembly and a control module. SUV gates add glass, a wiper motor, a defroster grid and often the camera, so the more that stays attached, the more of the job the part covers. Tailgates are large and awkward, so freight is a genuine line item, and a salvage gate lands in the donor vehicle's color, which means paint belongs in your budget rather than as a surprise later. Send the VIN and we quote in writing with the included items listed. We do not publish prices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit a power liftgate to a truck that has a manual one?
Not by swapping the gate alone. A power system is the motor or spindle drives, the powered latch, the switches and a control module that communicates with the body control module - the panel is the least of it. Buying a power gate for a manually equipped vehicle usually means paying for hardware you cannot use. Tell us which system your VIN was built with and we quote the matching part.
Will a used tailgate come in my color?
Assume it will not. Salvage panels arrive in the donor vehicle's color, so budget paint and blending from the start. Read the paint code from the label in the driver door jamb and give it to us with the VIN; a straight, rust-free gate in the wrong color usually beats a color-matched one with a corroded seam.
Does the glass, wiper and reversing camera come with it?
It depends on how the gate was pulled, so get the list in writing. Every light vehicle built from May 1, 2018 has a reversing camera under the federal rear-visibility standard, and on many vehicles it sits in the gate handle or trim, so it matters whether yours transfers or arrives fitted. The same goes for the wiper motor, defroster connections, third brake light and latch.
Will a power liftgate work as soon as it is bolted on?
Often not straight away. The gate module has to be talking to the vehicle, and after gate work the system generally needs calibrating so it knows its fully open and closed positions - a gate that was repaired and never calibrated is a common cause of one that will not run afterwards. That calibration needs a scan tool capable of addressing the individual module, so plan on a workshop visit as part of the job.
My power liftgate stops halfway - do I need a whole new liftgate?
Not before the fault is named. Published liftgate bulletins put the blame away from the panel: on one, a latch assembly was replaced because its internal switches were not reading the gate's open, secondary and closed positions; on another the cure was a control-module software update. Both are scan-tool jobs. Have the liftgate module read first.
The tailgate on my Super Duty opens by itself - is the tailgate bad?
Check the recall before you buy a gate. Ford recalled 2017-2019 F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks with the electric tailgate release switch in the handle: water reaching the wiring could short the circuit and release the latches, so the gate opened on its own. Trucks with a mechanical release handle were not affected. The fix rewired the tailgate harness and replaced the handle switch.
Is rust bubbling at the bottom edge of a used tailgate a deal breaker?
Usually yes, on a panel you are buying to avoid bodywork. Factory corrosion protection on a closing panel is a sealed hem flange plus a coating inside the closed cavity, and I-CAR's guidance is that a joint left unsealed lets moisture and air sit in it and rust. A bubble at the bottom seam is that joint failing, so judge it from photos of the outer edge and the inner face, not from the paint.
How is compatibility verified?

What if the part does not fit?
Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.
How long does shipping take?
Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
