About This Muffler

Before you order a used muffler, make sure it is a muffler you need. The muffler sits toward the rear and controls volume; the resonator sits between the catalytic converter and the muffler and cancels specific frequencies, which cleans up a raspy note but cannot make the car quieter. They look alike from underneath and get ordered the wrong way round constantly. After that, fitment is geometry: inlet and outlet diameter, measured across the outside of your pipe rather than the inside, plus how those ends are arranged on the case - centre to centre, offset to offset, or centre to offset. Case length and hanger-tab positions matter just as much, because a muffler right in every other respect will not hang correctly if the tabs sit elsewhere. Finally, say how yours attaches: a direct-fit unit slips or bolts into the original positions, while a universal muffler is a fabrication job - Walker sells a universal muffler installation kit of pipes, brackets, clamps and spouts to finish one.

Because every muffler quote is matched to your Nissan Altima by VIN, you get a part that fits the first time and keeps your repair on budget.

How Pricing Is Determined

Pricing for used muffler depends on several factors:

A muffler quote is driven by geometry and by how complete a part you want. Inlet and outlet diameter, the centre or offset arrangement of each, case length and hanger-tab positions decide whether a donor unit bolts up or needs fabricating in. Whether it arrives with its inlet pipe, tailpipe spout and tabs attached changes the quote and the labour. Internal design changes the sound, so a performance unit off a donor car is not a like-for-like swap for a factory one. We do not publish prices - send the vehicle and your measurements for a written quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it my muffler or my resonator?

Volume points at the muffler; tone points at the resonator. The muffler moderates how loud the exhaust is and sits near the rear. The resonator sits between the catalytic converter and the muffler and cancels particular frequencies, so it removes a high-pitched or raspy edge but cannot reduce volume. If the car simply got louder, it is almost always the muffler; if it got buzzy at one engine speed, look at the resonator.

How do I make sure a used muffler actually fits?

Four measurements and one photo. Inlet diameter, outlet diameter, the arrangement of the ends - centre to centre, offset to offset, or centre to offset - and the case length. Take the diameters across the outside of your pipe, not the inside, because that is what a slip joint works to. Then photograph the hanger tabs. A unit with the right ends but tabs in the wrong place still has to be re-hung.

Will a used muffler change how my car sounds?

It can, so donor choice matters. Chambered mufflers use internal walls and divided cavities to cancel sound by reflection and interference; that is the common factory design because it controls noise across the rev range, though the baffles restrict flow. Straight-through units run a perforated core packed with fibreglass inside a solid shell, flow more freely and sound louder. Glasspacks are louder again. Say if you want the factory note.

Can a used muffler be repaired or repacked?

Generally not. The shell is welded shut and the packing is not user-serviceable, so once it degrades the muffler is replaced rather than repacked. So judge a used one on more than photographs: surface rust on the case is normal after years under a car, but a rattle inside, a weeping seam or a soft spot at either end is a failed unit. Ask the supplier to shake it and listen.

Is it legal to run a louder used muffler, or none at all?

That is decided by your state, and some are strict. California's vehicle code requires every registered vehicle with an internal combustion engine to be equipped at all times with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and states that no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device.

There is a wire and a small motor on my muffler - can I fit a plain used one?

No - that is an electronically controlled muffler and a plain case will not stand in for it. A Faurecia patent for an in-muffler exhaust valve describes a valve supported by the muffler housing and moved between positions by an electrical actuator that responds to a controller, coordinated with the engine as it switches cylinder modes. Send a photo of the case and that connector.

Can a used muffler end up fitted the wrong way round?

Yes, and it announces itself as noise. Walker's causes of excessive exhaust noise include a muffler and resonator installed backwards, along with contact with the undercarriage, broken hangers and insulators, loose or leaking joints, a missing converter and a resonator substitute pipe in use. Mufflers are directional, so have your installer note the flow direction before the old one comes off.

Why did the muffler rust out when the rest of the exhaust looks fine?

Because of where it sits and what collects inside it. Walker says most exhaust deterioration happens from the inside out, from acidic moisture produced by the combustion of air and gasoline, and that short journeys make it worse because the system never gets hot enough for the water to evaporate. Salt attacks from outside, and Walker puts mufflers and tail pipes at the short end of that life.

How is compatibility verified?

Provide your VIN or full vehicle details so you can review the fitment basis in your quote before approving a purchase.

What if the part does not fit?

Most suppliers offer limited return or exchange options. Warranty and return terms are confirmed before purchase.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time varies by location, part size, and freight arrangement. Confirm the dispatch and delivery estimate in your quote.
